Asexual
Adults
What is an
asexual person? An asexual is a person who does not experience
sexual attraction. The Department of Sex Research says that 1%
of adults are asexual. Anthony Bogaert, a psychologist and human
sexuality expert at Brock University in Ontario, Canada analyzed
18,000 interviews with people about their sexual practices. One
percent of the survey respondents agreed with the question, "I
have never felt sexually attracted to anyone at all."
The percentage
of gays and lesbians is about 3% of the population. This raises
the question of whether asexuality is a form of sexual orientation.
No matter what it is, asexuals are stepping out of the closet
and declaring themselves. The Asexual Visibility and Education
Network is campaigning to promote awareness and acceptance of
asexuality. Bogaert's study is published in The Journal of Sex
Research.
