Holy Basil & Tulsi Tea

Holy basil (also known as Tulsi) is a plant that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of things such as improving sex, reducing stress, and decreasing symptoms of the common cold, influenza, diabetes, asthma, headaches, heart disease, and the list goes on and on. However, it is most often used for reducing stress as it provides those who take it with a sense of well-being without feeling drowsy.

Research of Holy Basil found that those taking 500 mg of holy basil leaf extract twice a day after meals for 60 days showed decreased anxiety, stress, and depression in those who have chronic anxiety. This is because holy basil/tulsi is an Adaptogen that helps to reduce the effects of stress on the body. Many people drink tulsi tea while others take supplements, typically holy basil.

A less commonly known effect is that holy basil may also help increase sex drive (libido), increasing testosterone levels. Testosterone is an androgen (sex hormone) produced by both males and females and plays a role in puberty and fertility. An interesting thing to note in animal studies was that despite an overall increase in testosterone, there was a reduction in sperm count in males, though no human studies have been claimed.

While there are no studies regarding sexual performance and enjoyment, it is documented that stress can impede one's sexual functioning and sex drive. Thus, it is easy to consider that simply by reducing stress levels through taking holy basil/tulsi; one may find that they are more open to sexual activity and have better responsiveness to sex by merely being in a more relaxed state.

Most people feel a sense of feeling like everything is going to be alright after taking holy basil or tulsi and feel a sense of calm without any sedation or fatigue. After taking it in either supplement form or tulsi tea, the effect is within about 30 minutes, and the effects last for several hours. Taking it regularly can create a constant feeling of calm.
