Dr. Love believes ductal lavage can help physicians to better understand how breast cancer develops and identify those who are most likely to develop breast cancer. This test is only recommended for women at high risk of breast cancer.

There may be even more screening options available soon. The National Cancer Institute is evaluating several options. One of these potential methods is positron-emission tomography. PET, typically used to learn more about a tumor, can track how fast glucose is used. An area of the breast that absorbs glucose quickly could possibly be an area of quickly growing cancer cells.

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States this year. Breast cancer screening for early detection is the best way to combat cancer at its early, most treatable stage.
