A Thai prostitute escaped caning for drug dealing in Singapore after a doctor established that the accused, who was identified in a passport as a man, had undergone a sex change, the Straits Times reported.

Singapore's drug laws, which include the death penalty for possession of certain amounts of drugs, provide for different punishments for males and females. While male offenders can be punished with up to 15 strokes of the rattan cane for drug-related offenses, female offenders are exempt from caning. The Straits Times said Mongkon Pusuwan's fate had been uncertain for weeks while the court waited for a medical report, which ultimately confirmed that the 37-year-old was a woman following a sex change operation undergone 10 years ago.

The Thai national was arrested close to the city-state's upscale Orchard Road shopping district last December and charged with trafficking 1.52 grams of cocaine and 2.5 grams of ketamine.

Married Couples Tend To Be Wealthier

Staying married has its benefits, especially financial, as a new U.S.-wide study shows the wealth of a married person is almost double that of somebody who is single. Divorce among U.S. baby boomers reduced personal wealth by about 77 percent compared to that of a single person, while the financial standing among those who remained married almost doubled, according to a nationwide study released this week. "If you really want to increase your wealth, get married and stay married.

On the other hand, divorce can devastate your wealth," said Jay Zagorsky, author of the study and a research scientist at Ohio Sate University's Center for Human Resource Research. Married people will see an increase in wealth that is more than just adding the assets of two single people, according to the study that was published in the Journal of Sociology. Those who remained together saw a 93 percent gain in wealth compared to that of a single person, while individuals facing divorce saw their financial situation deteriorate long before the decree became final, according to Zagorsky.

The study used data from surveys taken over a 15-year period involving 9,055 Americans who were between 21 and 28 years old in 1985. Those respondents who remained single had a steady, but slow growth in wealth, from less than $2,000 at the start of the surveys up to an average of about $11,000 after 15 years. However, those who married and stayed that way showed a sharp increase in wealth accumulation after marriage, growing to an average $43,000 by the 10th year of marriage or by about 16 percent a year.

For people who married and then divorced, there was a slow build-up of wealth during the early years of marriage and then a steady decline about four years prior to divorce. "Many of these people may have separated before the divorce became official, which would help explain why wealth starts falling so early," Zagorsky said. "Divorce is often a long and messy process, and you can see this in the four-year decline in wealth."

The study also cast doubt on a common assumption that divorce is much harder financially on women than on men. In fact, it showed that women suffered financially only slightly more than men.

Daytona Beach Nudity Law Found Unconstitutional

A federal judge struck down Daytona Beach's anti-nudity laws, saying they are unconstitutional. US District Judge John Antoon decided Friday that Daytona Beach's laws prohibiting public nudity and nudity in places that sell alcohol violate the First and 14th amendments' protections of free speech and equal protection. Daytona Beach also failed to prove its claim that adult nightclubs create secondary negative impacts on levels of crime, prostitution and illegal drug activity in neighborhoods, Antoon wrote.

"We won on every single issue," said Daniel Aaronson, a Fort Lauderdale attorney representing Lollipops Gentleman's Club in its federal lawsuit. City officials said they plan to study the judge's ruling and ask the City Commission about a possible appeal. Public nudity has been an issue at some of the city's large gatherings, such as Biketoberfest and Spring Break.

The Justice Department has filed a motion here asking a federal judge to force Google to comply with a subpoena for millions of search records. Prosecutors want a random sampling of 1 million Internet URLs and a random sampling of 1 million search queries submitted to Google over a one-week period.

The feds want to analyze the random data, along with similar data obtained from other major search engines, as they build a case supporting the 1998 Child Online Protection Act (COPA). Prosecutors want to prove that COPA would be "more effective than filtering software in protecting minors from exposure to harmful materials on the Internet."

In 2004 the Supreme Court left standing an injunction against enforcement of COPA, which would impose criminal penalties for commercial Internet sites that contain “harmful matter,” unless credit cards or other age verification methods are used. At the same time, the court left open the possibility that COPA might ultimately be upheld. Sending the case back to the lower courts, Justice Kennedy, writing for a narrow (5-4) majority, said the government must show why the voluntary use of filters to screen out material unsuitable for children would not work as well as the COPA criminal law.

Now the government is trying to do just that by using the subpoenaed search engines to develop a factual record of how often Web users encounter adult materials online and how Web searches turn up material the government says is ``harmful to minors.'' To analyze the logs, the Justice Department has hired Philip Stark, a professor of statistics at UC Berkeley.

Stark said that analyzing information from Google and other search engines would let him estimate the prevalence of materials which are harmful-to-minors and the effectiveness of content filters in blocking it. In other words, Stark apparently plans to create a miniature model of the Web for analysis and then test filters against it. Google has announced they will resist the request for data “vigorously.” In their response to the DOJ, Google objected on a number of grounds, among them that they did not view their data as being properly subject to a government subpoena for such a purpose.

An attorney for the ACLU said Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL received identical subpoenas and chose to comply with them rather than fight the request in court. However, Yahoo claims they did not provide any personal information in response to the Justice Department's subpoena and therefore they did not view it as a privacy issue.

On average, Italians who live without TV in the bedroom have sex twice a week, or eight times a month.

This drops to an average of four times a month for those with a TV, the study found. For the over-50s the effect is even more marked, with the average of seven couplings a month falling to just 1.5 times. The study found certain programs are far more likely to impede passion than others. Violent films will put a stop to sexual relations for half of all couples, while reality shows stem passion for a third of couples.

Millions of women may be jogging their way to sagging breasts as they set off on New Year fitness regimes without suitable bras, research suggests. Some 9.5 million British women could be irreversibly damaging their busts by exercising without a proper sports bra, the Portsmouth University team said. They found breasts moved in a 3D figure of eight and that uncontrolled movement strained fragile tissues and ligaments.

The study suggested as a woman runs a mile, her breasts bounced 135m. The report found each breast moved independently of the body by an average of 9cm for every step taken on the treadmill. With the average breast weighing between 200 and 300 grams, this movement puts great stress on the breast's fragile support structure - the outer skin and connective tissues known as Cooper's ligaments. Irreversible breast sag The research team found breast movements resulted in temporary pain and discomfort. But it also led to a more permanent stretching of the Cooper's ligament which leads to irreversible breast sag.

They claim that wearing an ordinary T-shirt bra reduced bounce by 38%, but wearing a sports bra by the firm Shock Absorber - which sponsored the research - reduced bounce by 78%. Dr Joanne Scurr who carried out the research said women needed to be aware of the effects of exercising without properly supporting their breasts. "People rightly spend time and effort to get the right footwear for exercise and it is equally important to wear the correct sports bra. "Proper support for breasts will reduce the stretch to the Cooper's ligament."
