Set in England during the 1950s, this movie revolves around Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton), whose unrelenting dedication to her family is well known throughout her blue-collar town.

However, there are more people than her rapidly aging mother and ill neighbor who depend on Vera's care. Though abortion was illegal and, of course, widely frowned upon in the '50s, Vera sees women going through unwanted pregnancies the same as she would anyone else -- human beings deserving of treatment. With this in mind, she regularly induces miscarriages for those who need them, and her patients are consistently grateful for her gentleness and understanding.

Unfortunately for Vera, the law doesn't see her as aiding those in need; they interpret the abortions as murder, as do most of the other people in her life. When Vera's activities are revealed, her family life and relationships with those around her -- including the ones she helped nurse back to health -- are put in jeopardy. Vera Drake also features performances from Jim Broadbent, Heather Craney, and Philip Davis. The movie is a bit long in parts, but the acting is very good and the story is compelling. A good movie.

The Adult Industry & The Senate

As Congress returns from spring break, the so-called Senatorial “nuclear option” looms over the Capital and the nation, threatening, in the words of L.A. Times writer Maura Reynolds, a “legislative Armageddon.” The stakes could hardly be higher for the Adult Entertainment Industry, which sits at ground zero in the cultural war battleground. The question is whether Senate procedures will be altered so that Democrats can no longer use the most effective -- almost the only -- parliamentary weapon in their arsenal, the filibuster, to block votes on extremely conservative nominees to the federal bench and the Supreme Court.

The phrase “nuclear option,” refers to the drastic nature of the threatened rule change as well as the possible response by Democrats in closing down major parts of government in retaliation. It is obvious why this issue is so vital to the adult industry. Supreme Court votes on First Amendment issues often turn on a single vote. If the social conservatives who now control two of the three branches of government also gain control of the judiciary, it will be a dark day for freedom of expression in this country.

“They are seeking to take away the independence of the judiciary -- the crown jewel in our system of government -- so that they can advance their own ideological agenda of the day,” said Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA). “That is exactly the kind of tyranny that our ancestors fought to prevent.”

Art Night Not Art?

In Boise Idaho, three dancers at the Erotic City nightclub have been ticketed here for violating the city’s anti-nudity ordinance. Normally, dancers at Erotic City are not nude. However, the arrests took place during “Art Night.” It seems Boise’s anti-nudity ordinance allows for exceptions for art of “serious artistic merit”–such as dance, theater and artistic drawing.

So, Erotic City owner Chris Teague started scheduling naked Art Night promotions, during which patrons are provided with pads and pencils and allowed to draw nude dancer models. Teague said he got the idea after a customer asked him if he could draw one of the dancers nude. Teague said he initially told the customer no, but reconsidered after reading the Boise ordinance. City officials are not buying it, obviously. But Teague’s biggest complaint is that the cops cited dancers instead of him. Teague has called the city government a “communist police state.” “These girls have families to feed,” said Teague. “They are doing this for a living.”

A misdemeanor charge of public nudity is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $300 fine. “This whole thing is unconstitutional,” Teague said. “This is all about freedom of expression. My club is a private place -- you don’t come into my club unless you want to come in.”

The FCC & Regulating Cable

Cable companies worried about a regulatory clampdown on their industry met the new Federal Communications Commission chairman today and got good news. "I prefer markets and competition to regulation whenever possible," FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin told the annual cable industry convention here. "Competition first, then regulation."

Now Martin's comments come as parent groups and others press Congress to take action against cable television firms for airing risqué fare and for doing too little to rein in price hikes, which have outpaced inflation over the past decade. Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) has floated the idea of extending the FCC's authority over indecency on the public airwaves to cable and satellite channels, while Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and groups such as Consumers Union have advocated a system allowing subscribers to pay for only the channels they want.

The cable industry has opposed both proposals, saying existing parental controls are sufficient for blocking adult content from children and an a la carte system would eventually drive up consumer cost. Martin favors establishing a "family tier" system for cable that would allow families to purchase a package of child-friendly channels, such as the Disney Channel and Viacom Inc.'s Nickelodeon, and avoid saltier offerings. "That's one of several tools" available to the cable industry, Martin said in an interview. He said the cable industry has an "opportunity to step up to the plate and address these issues" to head off regulation. Martin spoke briefly with Robert A. Iger, co-chief executive of the Walt Disney Co., at Tuesday's show.

In an interview afterward, Iger disagreed that creating a family tier is the "right solution." A la carte, Iger said, "sounds good at first blush" but would eventually drive up consumer prices. In a study last year, the FCC said an a la carte price system may cost consumers more, but the additional consumer choice may offset any price hike. The heads of two major cable operators were resistant to the idea of a family tier in questioning after a panel discussion in the morning. "We have great tools already" to block unwanted channels, said Glenn A. Britt, chairman of Time Warner Cable, which has 11 million subscribers. "We need to do a better job of educating customers that they are available."

James O. Robbins, president of Cox Communications Inc., with 6 million subscribers, said a family tier would be a "slippery slope" toward additional government regulation of content. "Who would decide what's on the family tier?" Britt asked. "What criteria would be used? How do the economics work? It's an idea, and it may be what happens, but there's a whole lot of details" undecided.

Women Love Sex Too!

Three-quarters of American women say they're satisfied with their sex life. The authors of a new book, "Secrets of the Sexually Satisfied Woman," surveyed 2,604 women aged 18 to 71 of various backgrounds, income groups and marital status over three months in 2003 on sexual issues ranging from size (and, yes, it does matter) and masturbation to premarital sex and porn. Among the strongest findings of Drs. Jennifer Berman and Laura Berman was that 80 percent of the women, whether sexually satisfied or not, believe sex should not take place without love, while 87 percent said infidelity was always wrong. But nearly 40 percent thought sex outside of marriage was fine, while 36 percent thought it was always or nearly always wrong.

Age proved to be a factor in areas beyond general satisfaction, with older women less likely to buy sex-related materials or engage in such variants as oral or anal sex. Masturbation got a thumbs up overall, with a slight majority (51 percent) partaking in self-gratification. Of those, 41 percent said they only did it while alone, while 7 percent only did it with a partner. Addressing a question for the ages, the researchers, who are professors at Northwestern and UCLA Medical Center, found that size does indeed matter. Women said they were likelier to be satisfied when their partner has a large penis, with the caveat that a bigger penis does not make a man more masculine. And speaking of myths, the respondents said they really do want to have orgasms.

Sex Survey To Risqué?

Indiana, Monroe County school administrators decided to question students about their sexual behavior after parents expressed concern about adolescents having sex -- but now some parents say the attention to detail in the planned survey is pornographic. The 51-question survey, to be conducted May 18 with students in Grades 6-12, includes topics such as intercourse, oral sex, dating and birth control. "I read that thing, and it's pornography to me," parent Eric Warren said. "To administer this survey in any workplace to adults over 18 would be sexual harassment." The voluntary, confidential survey also includes questions on abstinence, sex education and AIDS.

Parents will be notified by mail and must inform the district if they do not wish their children to take the survey, which will be given to about one-third of the students. The subject matter was not the only thing some Grandview Elementary School parents who previewed the survey found objectionable. Some opposed school officials' plan to ask 12- and 13-year-olds such specific questions about sex. Penny Buhr, whose son is a sixth-grader at Grandview, said he "doesn't know about this stuff. Nor should he, at his age." Jennifer Staab, the district's health programs coordinator, said the students already had studied sex education in fifth grade. Students who took a test survey in October seemed eager to participate, Staab said. "They felt 'it was about time' and seemed to want even more questions."

Nudity Healthy?

I was born nude. Nothing unusual here. In 1962, I was 8 years old, my parents took on the management of a nudist club in Colton. For the next 12 years this was my home. My family were members of other clubs before that so I have been a nudist all of my life. In the late '70s, I spent an afternoon being interviewed by Dennis Craig Smith, who along with William Sparks wrote, "The Naked Child: Growing Up Without Shame/Social Nudity/Its Effect on Children," a statistical study of adults who were brought up in a nudist environment. This study, along with others, concludes that the idea of exposure to the naked human body during one's formative years is somehow detrimental to one's adult mental state is not only wrong, but that the opposite is true.

These studies also point out that there is less drug abuse, fewer unwanted pregnancies and lower rates of sexually deviant behavior exhibited than that of the general population. Additionally, people who grew up in nudist environments are better educated, more tolerant of others and better adjusted to life in general. With this information at hand, I am completely astounded that, in 2005, there are those whose ignorance of fact allows them to attack a private gathering of nudists under the guise of "protecting the children." (I have to assume we are talking about protecting them from sexual abuse, as opposed to getting caught in the crossfire of spontaneous gang violence).

The primary Bible thumper behind this attack, James Hartline, who brought this "potentially harmful" activity to light (and whose rather complicated background can be examined via a quick online search), has obviously never bothered to educate himself by reading these studies or the Bible he's waving in everybody's face. Here is one man quoting from Genesis, "They were nude but they were not ashamed." Furthermore, because God created it, Pope John Paul II said, "The human body can remain nude and uncovered and preserve its splendor and its beauty."

As far as protecting the children from a group, it would appear that the Catholic Church should be at the top of Escondido Councilwoman Mare Waldron's list, as well as every other group, both private and public, in which children are present. Groups are not the problem, pedophiles are the problem. These people do not do their damage in public. I can guarantee that no priest has ever molested a child in front of the congregation. Attacking any group is not the answer, growing healthier adults is. To that end, by all available data, it would appear that bringing the next few generations of children up in an open nudist environment (not necessarily a nudist club, but a healthy "see, I'm OK, you're OK, nothing mysterious here" atmosphere) is the best available option our society has. By the way, if gang members were naked, it would be damn near impossible to carry a concealed weapon. (And if they did conceal them, they'd be where they belong!)

Male Circumcision Ban

A San Diego based group that calls itself a health and human rights organization recently submitted a proposed bill to Congress called the Male Genital Mutilation Bill ("MGM bill"). The bill, if adopted, would ban the practice of circumcising baby boys. The MGM bill has not yet found a Congressional sponsor and is therefore unlikely to go anywhere in the near future.

Nonetheless, it raises important questions about the relationship between the protection of children, gender equality, and religious freedom, questions that have ramifications beyond the proposed bill itself. Reportedly, at this time, more than half of the baby boys born in the United States undergo circumcision. For most of these infants, a doctor performs the procedure. For a minority, however, circumcision is a religious ceremony. It ordinarily occurs on the eighth day of a Jewish baby’s life. For Muslim children, it may occur on the seventh or eighth day of the boy’s life, some time in his first five years, or during adolescence.

Oldest Porn

Archaeologists in Germany discovered what they think are the 7,200 year old remains of two statues depicting a man and woman having sexual intercourse when joined. A dig in Saxony produced the find and shatters the idea that sex was a forbidden subject in that era. Previously the oldest sexual scenes were found in frescos of around 2,000 years in age. Dr Harald Stauble says: “... the man and woman were copulating and that he was standing behind her. The copulation option is far more likely, and would make this the oldest representation ever of a pornographic scene.”

Oral Sex Okay Say Teens

One in five U.S. teenagers say they have engaged in oral sex, an activity that some adolescents view as not sex at all and certainly less risky than intercourse, a report released Monday said. The survey of 580 children with a mean age of 14-1/2 found 20 percent said they had engaged in oral sex, compared to 14 percent who said they had engaged in sexual intercourse. In addition, one-third of the multi-ethnic 9th graders surveyed said they intended to have oral sex within the next six months and nearly one-fourth planned to have intercourse during the period.

It was more common for boys to have performed oral sex on girls than vice versa, the report said. Previous studies and numerous campaigns aimed at deterring teenaged sex have focused on intercourse, but as many as half of adolescents experience oral sex first, the report said. The risk of transmitting infections, including HIV, is significantly less with oral sex than with intercourse but is likely underestimated by teenagers, said the report in the journal Pediatrics.

Kids who engage in oral sex rarely used condoms or dental dams, even though herpes, hepatitis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis as well as the virus that causes AIDS can all be transmitted orally, it added. "Given the suggestion that adolescents do not view oral sex as sex and see oral sex as a way of preserving their virginity while still gaining intimacy and sexual pleasure, they are likely to interpret sexual health messages as referring to vaginal sex," wrote lead author Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, a pediatrician at the University of California, San Francisco. "Adolescents also believed that oral sex is more acceptable than vaginal sex for adolescents their own age in both dating and non-dating situations, oral sex is less of a threat to their values and beliefs, and more of their peers will have oral sex than vaginal sex in the near future," she wrote.

Miss Cleavage Turned Savage

The winner of The Sun’s Miss Cleavage contest left a rival scarred for life after attacking her in a jealous frenzy. Kerry McCormack went berserk when she spotted Hayley Marsden proudly showing off her new boob job in a nightclub. McCormack punched 22-year-old Hayley in the face with such force that a ring on her finger shattered the pretty brunette’s cheek and smashed her eye socket. The blow was so hard that McCormack, who had been knocking back vodka, shattered a knuckle.

At Durham Crown Court McCormack admitted grievous bodily harm and was ordered to pay £4,000 compensation.

She will be electronically tagged and was sentenced to a six-month night-time curfew. John Milford, QC, told her as he passed sentence: “I have thought long and hard about whether I should send you straight to prison, but it seems to me there is an alternative to custody.” The court was also told that McCormack, who now runs a tanning business, received a police caution five years ago for an attack on a girl in the street. Last night Hayley said: “I just cannot believe that a former friend would do what she did to me. I think she was jealous of my looks. I had just had a boob job and was looking better than I had for a while.”

Hayley told how during their friendship McCormack had comforted her when she had rheumatoid arthritis. She added: “When I was ill she would come to visit. I also played a part in her success at the time she was modeling, it was me who pushed her on to do that. “We began to drift apart about two years ago due to a few things that were happening, but I didn’t think there was any animosity between us. Now I never want to see her again. I don’t feel the same about myself, it knocks your confidence — you see something different when you look in the mirror.”
