Home-based Adult Internet Business Under Attack

In Kingston, Washington, Jeff and Susan Owen had been charged with a misdemeanor for violating a Kitsap County adult entertainment zoning regulation by running a home-based adult Internet business. It seems the couple’s home was within 1,000 feet of Spectrum Community School.

Because Jeff Owen had been to court as a high-profile opponent of a county construction project near his home, he suspected the county had filed charges in retaliation. Now comes word from the Owens’ attorney Robert Apgood that an order dismissing the charges in this bizarre case has been issued by the court. The state has 30 days to appeal.

A former employee of a Hooters restaurant in Alabama claims he was fired after complaining about a female corporate trainer who allegedly suggested waitresses have sex with customers for extra money.

Jarman Gray, a former assistant manager at the eatery claims he was fired when he complained about a trainer named Cat who told waitresses that they were “the ones with the pussies and you are in control because of that.” She then said “If you need the extra money, go ahead and suck a dick or fuck a customer if the money is right.”

People who are unrelated to one another and kiss each other on the lips for more than five minutes at public places in the Indonesian city of Tangerang will now face arrest. The government in Tangerang, a suburb west of Jakarta, defended the regulation as a practical guideline for its officers to follow up on tough and heavily criticized anti-prostitution laws passed by the city council last year.

“Please do not dramatize this. We will not arrest people at will as we are not oppressors,” Ahmad Lutfi, head of the city’s public order department, told the Koran Tempo newspaper.

Prostitutes in the Brazilian city of Salvador are starting up their own radio station. The Association of Prostitutes of Bahia state has won government permission for the project, enabling FM station Radio Zona to start broadcasting in the second half of the year. Project coordinator Sandro Correia told Reuters “We are not going to apologize for prostitution but we are going to struggle for the dignity of the profession.”

Jewish Hackers Target Porn Web Sites

A group of Jewish ultra-Orthodox hackers is waging a war against pornographic web sites, replacing their content with nothing but the picture of a revered rabbi. So far only Israeli-based Web sites have been targeted.

In one case the hackers scrapped the site's entire contents. Instead of seeing images of sexy girls, anyone who logs onto the site encounters the stern look of the white-bearded Rabbi Menahem Mendel Schneerson, the late leader of the popular Jewish Lubavitch stream. Below his image appear the words "we, the Da-Net group, have hacked into this site and erased all its abomination." The group then describes the porn site as "a violation which has caused many people's death, troubles and calamities."

Erotica Goes Mainstream

For years, Tina Engler was just another frustrated erotica writer, shunned by publishers and literary agents who told her that women would not buy her stories of female sexual desire. Engler, however, wasn't convinced. She figured that if she liked sensual reads, there had to be other women who did as well. So the single mother of two daughters started to write erotica novels. She managed to write six under three different pen names - Jaid Black being her best-known - while still going to college, and in 2000, she started the Web site Ellora's Cave, which sold her books and those of other authors on demand and eventually in e-book form.

Until recently, Engler never advertised her site, but readers found her and her publishing business grew. By 2004, she had about $1 million in sales. Now, the Borders Group and Barnes & Noble distribute her books. "Erotica legitimizes the female sexual experience," Engler says. "Women read these books and it makes them feel normal about their own fantasies."

Playboy creator Hugh Hefner is in the middle of an interview about his 80th birthday when a TV cameraman asks him to move a statue of former girlfriend Barbi Benton from the shelf behind him. The statue's nude breasts were in the shot and that might not pass muster with TV decency standards.

"As much as things change, they stay the same," Hefner remarks, disappointment in his voice. "There is still controversy about, maybe even more than before, not just nudity — a nude statue."

Any regrets? "Certainly it is a life well-lived and I wouldn't trade places with anybody," he said. "My life has been so rewarding and so satisfying, I would be hesitant to change anything."

When a couple of men get up on stage, open their capes and whip their penises out and put them into shapes - the windsurfer, the wrist watch, the hamburger with sesame seeds - after the initial thrill of seeing a penis on stage, no one's really that shocked.

However, consider two women getting up on stage, whipping off their bathrobes to reveal four sizeable breasts and beginning to squash them into a convulsion of shapes - the doughnut, the dish rack, the mini-bar, the sniffer dog. What then? Are the responses different?

Perhaps. Typically in a still male dominated industry (comedy), women aren't supposed to make such a spectacle of themselves. In fact, there's still a lingering resistance to women who are funny, unruly and loud. Until the 1960s, stand-up comedy had been an unfriendly place for female performers, and women rarely appeared in a comic act without a male partner. Often women direct their jokes at themselves in self-deprecating rants, or at other women. Much of the humor of Phyllis Diller and Joan Rivers falls into that category.

The hope of this show is to challenge such stereotypes while providing a new twist on comedy. It is not meant as erotica, after all sagging breasts tucked in pants is not comparable to a wet t-shirt contest.
