Illinois Refusing Women Birth Control

Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich (D) had to issue an emergency rule last week that requires pharmacies to accept and fill prescriptions for contraceptives without delay, after a growing number of complaints nationwide that some pharmacists are refusing to dispense birth control pills and the "morning-after" pill.

He also established a toll-free number that residents can call to report refusals by pharmacies. Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich said pharmacists' refusal to fill prescriptions for contraceptives is not just a statewide problem.

It came in response to complaints that on Feb. 23, 2005 a pharmacist refused to fill prescriptions for two women at an Osco pharmacy in downtown Chicago. The governor joined reproductive rights groups in describing the refusals as part of a concerted push by conservative groups to decrease availability of contraceptives. "It's not just in the Loop; this is happening all over the country," he said. "There's a pattern of this behavior.

This is not just a coincidence, but part and parcel of a larger campaign." Women in at least 12 states, including Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina and California, have reported encountering pharmacists unwilling to fill their prescriptions. "We've heard stories about them being turned away or referred to other pharmacies," said Karen Pearl, national president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. "And even more alarmingly, some women are being denied birth control and the pharmacist keeps their prescription.

They are also being given moral lectures, religious lectures. Women are being told contraception is abortion, which it is not." Fernando E. Grillo, director of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, said the new rule "clarifies a duty we believe has always existed."

There are no federal laws forcing pharmacies to fill all prescriptions. At least 11 states are considering legislation that would allow pharmacists to deny prescriptions, and legislation has been proposed in California, Missouri and New Jersey that would protect a customer's ability to have prescriptions filled.

North Carolina's pharmacist licensing board recently clarified its policy to prevent pharmacists from obstructing customers from getting prescriptions. "There's a lot of pending action on all sides," said Judy Waxman, vice president of health and reproductive rights at the National Women's Law Center.

Fraternity In Porn Video

In Chico California, members of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity at California State University have been suspended from participating in any activities on campus for an indefinite period of time while a university investigation takes place.

It seems the fraternity boys showed up in a Shane’s World “College Invasion” adult DVD. The video was shot at the student’s off-campus frat house. University President Paul Zingg said he is “disgusted” by the fraternity’s behavior. “The fraternity will be dealt with in an unmistakably firm fashion,” he said. Punishment for the students could range from sanction to expulsion from the university. In addition, the fraternity could lose its charter to the national Phi Kappa Tau organization. Nicole Henderson, a spokesperson for Shane’s World, maintains that the “College Invasion” series only shows what really goes on in colleges.

She says there is a long waiting list of college students wanting to participate. The production company gets many letters saying “You think that was wild? Come to our school.”

Money From Nudity Dirty?

In Milford, Connecticut a controversy has arisen over whether a local school should accept $800 donated by The Penthouse Boutique for a project to build a rock-climbing wall.

Republican Town Committee Chairman Jack Fowler said no school should accept money from the adult industry. “I would not take it. This is not blood money. But porn money is close enough.” Fowler said. “This is not going to be acceptable, and you can quote me,” Live Oaks Principal Raymond Vitali said.

Not everyone agrees that the money is “tainted.” Kimberley Rivera, a member of the fund-raising group seeking donations, said if Penthouse Boutique obeys the law and pays its taxes, then its contribution should count. Penthouse Boutique owner Dan Quinn said he is aware of the controversy, but it’s for a good purpose. “I want them to have the money. Hopefully, they are going to take it,” Quinn said.

Adults Sites To Have XXX Domain Names?

Mary Conners, founder of the Protect Every Child organization, is campaigning to force adult web sites to adopt triple-X domain names. Conners began her campaign four years ago when her granddaughter accidentally pulled up an adult web site while trying to view a teen magazine online.

Conners has collected 8000 signatures on a petition to be delivered to Senator Elizabeth Dole and is hoping Dole will introduce legislation on the issue. “I’m not trying to get rid of adult web sites We just want to put them in a place where children are protected from them,” said Conners. “If they are moved to triplex, top-level domain filters can be installed on computers to block all XXX porn sites.”

Brian Young, the Internet marketing manager at adult entertainment company Adam and Eve, said there are a lot of problems with the idea. “I don’t know how the government would plan which web sites would use triple-x and which would not,” said Young.

Nude Art Obscene?

Officials in Bartholomew County, Indiana have warned the White River Truck Repair and Yard Art company, which is situated near an Interstate highway, that certain nude statues in the yard art collection must be moved to a location where children cannot see them.

Included in the questionable yard art are cement replicas of the Venus di Milo and Michelangelo’s David. Bartholomew County Inspector Frank Butler says Indiana law prohibits the display of nudity where children might see it. “Just because something is nude doesn’t mean it’s obscene,” said Indiana ACLU attorney Ken Falk. Nudity has been part of art for hundreds of years, said Falk, and using nudity to define obscenity could raise serious constitutional questions.

A New Jersey adult store, Playtime Boutique, has shipped 1000 condoms to Merriwa (population 2000). Playtime Boutique already had a reputation for international activism, having made headlines in 2003 when it launched “operation vibration” in Iraq­sending dozens of vibrators with personalized messages to the nation’s women.

“Wherever we see a need for some type of sexual liberation or sexual assistance Playtime will be there to pitch in,” said Drake. Upper Hunter Valley Shire Mayor Barry Rose said the council was prepared to help distribute the prophylactics to the town once they arrived.

The Parents Television Council believes that too much prime-time TV is indecent. So indecent that it never misses a show. In the group's Alexandria, Va., offices, five analysts sit at desks with a VCR, a TV and a computer. They tape every hour of prime-time network TV, and a lot of cable. CSI. The Apprentice. God help them, even Reba. And they watch to determine if it is okay for you to watch and how they may stop what they find offensive from being aired.

No Catholic Funeral

Roman Catholic bishop Robert Brom has denied funeral rites to John McCusker, 31. The decree applies to all 98 Catholic churches in San Diego or Imperial counties. Brom’s big sin? He owned a bar and a dance club popular with gays. That clashes with the church’s moral teachings. However, the Bishop’s decision was not related to McCusker’s sexual orientation, according to Chancellor Rodrigo Valdivia. Brom’s business was “adult entertainment,” said Valdivia, “which is inconsistent with Catholic teaching.” John McCusker died of congestive heart failure at a ski resort, according to his family.

No Nasty Grooves For Cheerleaders

Texas State Representative Al Edwards (D-Houston) has introduced a bill here which would clamp down on bumping and grinding in high school cheerleading routines. Under the bill, if a school district knowingly permits “sexually suggestive” performances at athletic events and other extracurricular competitions, funds from the state would be reduced in an amount to be determined by the education commissioner. Edwards said he filed the bill as a result of his having seen several instances of ribald cheerleader performances in his district. “We say to them, ‘Don’t get involved in sex unless it’s marriage or love, it’s dangerous out there’ -- and yet the teachers and directors are helping them go through those kind of gyrations,” said Edwards.

Porn Opera Causes Uproar

Russia's Bolshoi Theater has sparked outrage by putting on an opera that some lawmakers and a pro-Kremlin youth group say is pornographic. The opera, "Rosenthal's Children," is about a scientist who clones five great classical composers -- Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Wagner, Mussorgsky and Verdi. The scientist then dies, and the cloned musicians -- unprepared for life on their own in the 1990s -- end up on the street.

Mozart, the youngest of them, falls in love with a prostitute whose pimp is always interfering. In the end, the pimp poisons all five geniuses. Some members of the Russian parliament have described the state-funded Bolshoi's first new opera in more than 30 years as pornographic, vulgar and unsuitable for such a venerable institution. "It is immoral to depict the world's greatest composers ... as bums who drink vodka and rub shoulders with prostitutes that play music in a train station and beg for money," said Sergei Neverov, who initiated a resolution criticizing the opera.

"We are protesting that a man who is a pornographer and uses foul language is being given a platform in the Russian State Bolshoi Theater, with state funds," the group's head, Vasily Yakemenko, told The Associated Press. Moving Together activists, who have staged daily demonstrations at the central Moscow theater, plan to protest at its entrance but would not try to disrupt the performance, he said. "If people want to go to the opera of a pornographer, that's their choice," Yakemenko said.

Missouri Senate & The Anti-Adult Biz Bill

The Missouri Senate took just one hour for the Missouri Senate to convene and pass the third reading of SB 32, a sweeping anti-adult business bill that increases penalties for violations, limits hours of operation, prevents virtually all interactions between strippers and their audience, and creates new categories of "public nuisance" that can close businesses completely.

"I hope the passage of this bill on its third reading will be a wake-up call to the larger chain stores in Missouri and surrounding states," stated Marilyn Glessner, owner of Lilith's Lair, an independent adult boutique in Springfield, Mo., in a press release.

"This bill will send adult clubs and stores in Missouri back to pre-WWII days." The bill, which passed by a vote of 23-7, now goes to the Missouri House of Representatives for consideration – but with the bill having been approved by all of the relevant Senate committees and passed just two months after its introduction suggests that it may be on a "fast track" through the House and on the governor's desk for signature before the summer.

As noted AVN.com's previous coverage of this onerous legislation, the bill, which is virtually unchanged from the version detailed here, includes an expansive yet vague "definition" of a "sexually-oriented business," an over-inclusive definition of "sexually-oriented materials" and imposes clearly unconstitutional special tax burdens on adult businesses which are not required of other First-Amendment-protected speech providers. Regarding adult cabarets, exotic dancers (or any other employees) who show so much as an "anal cleft" – i.e., the very top of the ass crack – are forbidden to have any direct contact with customers, and must remain on a stage two feet high and 10 feet away from the nearest customer, separated by a 2-foot high railing. Adult businesses must be closed for 10 hours each day, and all day Sunday and on all official state or federal holidays, plus all employees must undergo extensive background checks (with no privacy guarantees regarding any personal information supplied to the state) and be specially licensed.

The Missouri Association of Club Executives has mounted an extensive lobbying campaign in an attempt to defeat the bill, and several independent store owners are targeting legislators as well.

Government Site Promoting Abstinence Only

An array of advocacy groups are calling on the U.S. government to take down one of its new Web sites, saying it presents biased and inaccurate advice to parents on how to talk to their children about sex. The site -- 4parents.gov -- stresses the promotion of abstinence. Emphasizing abstinence is fine, said the groups, but the government, under the conservative Bush administration, also should stress the need for contraception if sexual relations do occur.

The site does give inflated failure rates of birth control methods suggesting that birth control pills have a 8% failure rate when they actually have a 2% failure rate.

The site advises parents to tell their teens why they should not have sex: "Tell them abstinence is the healthiest choice. They will not have to worry about getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant. They will not have to worry about sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Nor will they have to worry that the person they are dating is only interested in them because of sex."

The Human Rights Campaign said it was particularly concerned about sections of the Web site that focus on sexual orientation. The group works for equal rights for gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The site says: "If you believe your adolescent may be gay, or is experiencing difficulties with gender identity or sexual orientation issues, consider seeing a family therapist who shares your values to clarify and work through these issues."

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a separate letter to Leavitt, that describing sexual orientation as an "alternative lifestyle" is outdated and inaccurate language that can alienate youth at a time when they are particularly vulnerable.

Was Jesus Gay?

The first openly gay Anglican bishop has sparked outrage for suggesting that Jesus might have been homosexual. The Retired Rev. Gene Robinson, the Bishop of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church of the United States, said that Jesus was an unmarried, “non-traditional man” who did not uphold family values, “traveled with a bunch of men” and enjoyed an especially close relationship with one of his disciples. His comments, made in a recent address at the Christ Church of Hamilton and Wenham in Massachusetts, have enraged traditional Anglicans who have suggested that the Bishop should be “struck down by thunder and lightning bolts”.

However, many believe that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and that through interpretation errors of the Bible that has long been overlooked.

British Women Own Sex Toys!

Prostitution School

Learning Prostitution in School A Diploma in Sex Trade! That will be among the several qualifications on offer when a government-sponsored school for prostitutes opens in New Delhi, India.
