Woman Convicted Of Raping A Man

A Norwegian woman has been sentenced to nine months in jail for raping a man.
A 31-year-old man fell asleep on a sofa at a party in January 2004 and woke to find the 23-year-old woman was having oral sex with him. Under Norwegian law, all sexual acts with someone who is "unconscious or for other reasons unable to oppose the act" are considered rape.

The court sentenced the woman Wednesday to nine months in jail and ordered her to pay 40,000 Norwegian crowns ($6,355) in compensation. "This is a very harsh sentence," the woman's lawyer, Per Magne Kristiansen, told the Norwegian news agency NTB. The woman argued the man had been awake and consented.

The prosecutor had sought a 10-month sentence and argued the court should not be more lenient with a woman than a man. It was Norway's first conviction of a woman for rape. Norway has long traditions of equality -- 40 percent of the cabinet of Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, for instance, are women.

A performance artist aims to do just that when he attempts to kiss a photograph of Blair for eight hours in a marathon display of affection for the British leader, who is seeking reelection on May 5, 2005. For more than 30 years, a Victorian-themed resort at the southern tip of New Jersey said no to "skintight, formfitting or bikini type" bathing attire on males over the age of 12.

For an ocean resort that once required men and women to swim at different times of day, wearing heavy woolen, cover-everything swimsuits, it made sense to modernize. "It's a beach town, for God's sake," said Police Chief Diane Sorantino. The town also agreed to lift a rule that stopped bare-chested men from strolling along the beach front promenade.

Former Lesbian Minister Wins Her Appeal

A lesbian Methodist minister defrocked last year after admitting to living with a woman won her appeal against the church's decision because it had not defined "practicing homosexual," the United Methodist Church said.

She had been stripped her of her credentials as a minister at the First United Methodist Church of Germantown, Philadelphia. She was allowed to have a lesser role in the church but could not perform ceremonies such as baptisms and weddings. "An appeals committee has reversed a clergy court verdict in the case of Irene Elizabeth Stroud," the statement said.

In a 14-page decision, the committee reversed both the conviction and the penalty on the technical grounds that the church has not properly defined the term "practicing homosexual". The committee also held that the church law under which the charges were brought was a new standard that had not been formally ratified by the church authorities and so could not be used to convict Stroud.

Stroud, 34, was originally found to have violated the church's Book of Discipline, which forbids the ordination and appointment of "self-avowed practicing homosexuals." Stroud told the hearing she was in a committed relationship with another woman and had decided to be open about her sexuality because it was the honest, Christian thing to do.

Her stance was backed by many members of her Philadelphia congregation. The committee said it recognized that "practicing homosexual" may involve engaging in "genital sexual activity" but that the term had not been clearly defined by the church and so it could not be used against Stroud.

Stroud said in an interview on Friday she was relieved at the decision but not elated because she didn't know whether the church would actually appeal to the Judicial Council. "I'm encouraged and I'm hopeful, and I'm grateful that the committee took seriously the case that was brought," she said.

Rhode Island police say that a man had offered steak for sex! He didn't have any money, but police say that didn't stop Wayne Glaude, 22, from soliciting sex from an undercover officer. Instead, police said, he offered steak. Wayne, who works at a meat company, tried to strike a deal with the undercover officer, according to Detective Capt. Luke Gallant. "He didn't have any money, and had a couple of nice T-bones sitting at home." He was arrested and pleaded innocent in Providence District Court to a count of soliciting from a motor vehicle. He was released on personal recognizance.

Sexually Abused Animals In Sweden

More than 200 animals, mostly horses, have been sexually abused in Sweden since the 1970s, the country's animal-protection agency said Friday in its first report on bestiality. The government commissioned the study after reports sexual abuse of animals could be on the rise in Sweden.

Most of the cases were reported by veterinarians and police after 2000, the study said. But it was not clear if sex with animals had become more common or if people had become more likely to report it, it said. Authors of the report noted Sweden has not outlawed bestiality, as has Canada, Britain and some US states. Abusers can only be prosecuted if the animal is physically injured. The study found 209 cases of sexual abuse of animals, including 161 involving horses, 18 dogs and 17 cattle.

Teacher Fired Over Licking Student's Ears

A Main High School teacher has been charged with having unlawful sexual contact with a 17-year-old female student during a tutoring session at the teacher’s home, police said. The teacher is free on $500 bail pending a June 14 court date, after her arrest at her home. She is a longtime teacher at Bath’s high school. Brunswick Detective Sgt. Mark Waltz said the teacher-student relationship makes the consensual relationship a criminal act.

Virginity For Sale

Inside a tiny breeze block house, beneath the dusty hills on the desert outskirts of Lima, religious paintings like the Virgin and Child and the Sacred Heart share wall space with photographs of a beguiling young woman posing as a model.

Graciela's bid to sell her virginity provoked outrage in Peru despite doing it to help her sick 43-year-old mother, whose daughter, Graciela, is prepared to take drastic measures to help her.

Graciela - or Gracia as she prefers to be known - has been working since the age of eight, left school at 15 and now three years later earns around $60 a month acting or modeling.

Her mother is too sick to work and she does not want her 12-year-old brother to miss school. But Gracia says the money she earns is not enough and every month she worries about not being able to pay the bills or having to say No when her brother Guillermo comes back from school asking for money for books.

Last month, Gracia decided to sell her virginity to pay for her mother's medical treatment and to improve her family's quality of life. "My mother was ill and my brother and me too. [And I felt] the utter hopelessness of wanting to move forward, wanting to study, be someone and you just don't get the opportunity because it's all about money," says Gracia.

"Sometimes you find yourself at a crossroads and you see no way out," she adds, staring at the terra-cotta painted walls. "You stop and see there's only thing that's going to help you and perhaps it only has to happen once in your life. "That's what I thought. And you never have to do it again. "You have to get on with it, without looking back, because you can study, work with this money and help lots of people who are poor like me." She said she offered to sell her virginity to the highest bidder, advertising herself in newspapers, on television and the Internet.

It did not take long before many in this staunchly Catholic country were up in arms. Some said her actions were nothing short of prostitution. Others said she needed psychological help. She says some people admired her ingenuity, saying she was doing more than the teenage girls who lost their virginity in the parks because they wrongly thought they were in love.

Her virginity almost became a question of national pride, with some commentators and chat show hosts accusing her of trying to damage Peru's reputation. But Gracia was unfazed by the criticisms. "People in Peru are opportunistic and they see everyone else's problems, but never their own," she says. "I'm just a person who's trying to get ahead in life. I've always worked since I was little, but here there are no opportunities for young people. I came out and said publicly what my situation was and nobody, nobody has been capable of saying, thank you, I'll help you with something."

Graciela laughs as she recounts how a Canadian man offered her $1.5m (£780,000) to have sex with her. "He said he'd prefer I didn't do it, but if I was going to do it with anyone, it should be with someone who treated me right and I think he knew his bid wasn't going to be topped. "He was really happy when I said No."

Almost a month after Gracia advertised her virginity for sale, her economic situation has not changed. But her moral situation has. She says she has decided not to give up her virginity for any price. "Mum lives with me 24 hours a day, and respects my decision because I am an adult. "But she was giving me advice, and explaining how my life might be if I did this: What example would I give my children, what kind of man would accept me with this past, would it make me happy, this money?

"Obviously it's a necessity, but it's not everything, it's a bad necessity and it made me realize that this money wasn't going to make me happy, I could make myself happy with my own merits." Some critics have suggested that Gracia offered to sell her virginity solely to court publicity and never actually intended to go through with it. Only she will know if that is the case. Certainly, her arguments are convincing, but perhaps so too is her acting. But what she has done, indisputably, is come out and say: The way many people live in Peru is wrong and I want to do something about it.

Two communist rebels in the Philippines truly became "brothers in arms" when the men were married in a jungle camp. Draped in a red flag with hammer and sickle in gold sequins, they exchanged vows, walked under an archway of assault rifles and were serenaded with revolutionary love songs by a choir of New People’s Army comrades.

Aids Funds In Danger From Using Sexy Language

A Minnesota legislator who said he was "shocked and disgusted" by explicit language on a gay-outreach web site has won approval in a House committee to eliminate all Health Department funding for the state's largest AIDS-prevention program.

A measure sponsored by Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Delano, would end $425,000 in funding for the Minnesota AIDS Project (MAP). It would forbid state funding for "web sites, pamphlets, or other communications that contain sexually explicit images or language."

Emmer said he objected to language and images in articles on the web site of Pride Alive, a program sponsored by MAP that targets gay and bisexual men. The articles were from two Pride Alive magazines, Shameless and Outsight, published in printed and electronic forms. While defending the web site language, MAP said Friday that no state money is used for the Pride Alive project or its magazines, which are supported by private donations, a distinction noted on the Pride Alive site.

"The language is appropriate for the gay and bisexual audience it's aimed at, written with language that communicates directly with them," said Amy Weiss, MAP spokeswoman. State Health Commissioner Aggie Leitheiser said her department is talking with House members about Emmer's amendment to the Health Department budget bill.

"MAP has been a pretty good partner for us, doing things we can't do. But as far as sexually explicit language, I'm not sure what that means." Said Emmer: "I'm not trying to change anybody's lifestyle. People can do whatever they want. I just don't think state money should be used for this childish and offensive language."

Emmer said he hasn't talked with Health Department officials about his concerns, and he isn't sure how to define inappropriate sexual language. "Maybe that's a role for the [Health] commissioner," he added. Health officials said the department's review committee has approved AIDS-prevention material supported with public money, based on federal guidelines.

Losing Health Department funding would cut the MAP budget by about 10 percent, including money for the state AIDS hot line, HIV testing clinics and HIV prevention outreach programs, said Lorraine Teel, MAP executive director. "This amendment is telling us to shut up, and we won't shut up," she said. "We are doing important public health work to protect Minnesotans Emmer, an attorney, said he might be persuaded to restore some MAP money but not to change the prohibition against sexually explicit language because "it's just plain wrong."

Book Ban Shows Violation Of Free Speech

Alabama Representative Gerald Allen (R) has put forward a bill under which public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.

Books by Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal, for example, would get the axe. Shakespeare is safe for now. Allen originally wanted to ban some of the Bard’s works, but in the face of criticism, has exempted the classics.

Allen also had to back down from including public and college libraries in the bill. “I don’t look at it as censorship,” said Allen. “I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children.” In book after book, says Allen, he reads about the “homosexual agenda.” “It’s not healthy for America, it doesn’t fit what we stand for,” said Allen.

Problem is Allen, that is what you don't stand for, and it is YOUR agenda. It is in complete violation of this country's constitution.
