Imagine a vaccine that would protect women from a serious gynecological cancer. Wouldn't that be great? Well, both Merck and GlaxoSmithKline recently announced that they have conducted successful trials of vaccines that protect against the human papilloma virus.

HPV is not only an incredibly widespread sexually transmitted infection but is responsible for at least 70 percent of cases of cervical cancer, which is diagnosed in 10,000 American women a year and kills 4,000. Wonderful, you are probably thinking, all we need to do is vaccinate girls (and boys too for good measure) before they become sexually active, around puberty, and HPV -- and, in thirty or forty years, seven in ten cases of cervical cancer -- goes poof.

Not so fast: We're living in "God's country" now. The Christian right doesn't like the sound of this vaccine at all. "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful," Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council told the British magazine New Scientist, "because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex." Raise your hand if you think that what is keeping girls virgins now is the threat of getting cervical cancer when they are 60 from a disease they've probably never heard of.

I remember when people rolled their eyeballs if you suggested that opposition to abortion was less about "life" than about sex, especially sex for women. You have to admit that thesis is looking pretty solid these days. No matter what the consequences of sex -- pregnancy, disease, death -- abstinence for singles is the only answer.

Just as it's better for gays to get AIDS than use condoms, it's better for a woman to get cancer than have sex before marriage. It's honor killing on the installment plan. Christian conservatives have a special reason to be less than thrilled about the HPV vaccine. Although not as famous as chlamydia or herpes, HPV has the distinction of not being preventable by condoms.

It's Exhibit A in those gory high school slide shows that try to scare kids away from sex, and it is also useful for undermining the case for rubbers generally -- why bother when you could get HPV anyway? In 2000, Congressman (now Senator) Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who used to give gruesome lectures on HPV for young Congressional aides, even used HPV to propose warning labels on condoms. With HPV potentially eliminated, the antisex brigade will lose a card it has regarded as a trump unless it can persuade parents that vaccinating their daughters will turn them into tramps, and that sex today is worse than cancer tomorrow.

According to New Scientist, 80 percent of parents want the vaccine for their daughters -- but their priests and pastors haven't worked them over yet. What is it with these right-wing Christians? Faced with a choice between sex and death, they choose death every time. No sex ed or contraception for teens, no sex for the unwed, no condoms for gays, no abortion for anyone -- even for that poor 13-year-old pregnant girl in a group home in Florida.

I would really like to hear the persuasive argument that this middle-schooler with no home and no family would have been better off giving birth against her will, and that the State of Florida, which totally failed to keep her safe, should have been allowed, against its own laws, to compel this child to bear a child. She was too young to have sex, too young to know her own mind about abortion -- but not too young to be forced onto the delivery table for one of the most painful experiences human beings endure, in which the risk of death for her was three times as great as in abortion. Ah, Christian compassion! Christian sadism, more likely.

It was the courts that showed humanity when they let the girl terminate her pregnancy. As they flex their political muscle, right-wing Christians increasingly reveal their condescending view of women as moral children who need to be kept in line sexually by fear. That's why anti-choicers will never answer the call of pro-choicers to join them in reducing abortions by making birth control more widely available: They want it to be less available. Their real interest goes way beyond protecting fetuses -- it's in keeping sex tied to reproduction to keep women in their place. If preventing abortion was what they cared about, they'd be giving birth control and emergency contraception away on street corners instead of supporting pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions and hospitals that don't tell rape victims about the existence of EC.

David Hager would never use his position with the FDA to impose his personal views of sexual morality on women in crisis. Instead of blocking nonprescription status for emergency contraception on the specious grounds that it will encourage teen promiscuity, he would take note of the six studies, three including teens, that show no relation between sexual activity and access to EC.

He would be calling the loudest for Plan B to be stocked with the toothpaste in every drugstore in the land. How sexist is denial of Plan B? Anti-choicers may pooh-pooh the effectiveness of condoms, but they aren't calling to restrict their sale in order to keep boys chaste. While the FDA dithers, the case against selling EC over the counter weakens by the day. Besides the now exploded argument that it will let teens run wild, opponents argue that it prevents implantation of a fertilized egg -- which would make it an "abortifacient" if you believe that pregnancy begins when sperm and egg unite.

However, new research by the Population Council shows that EC doesn't work by blocking implantation; it only prevents ovulation. True, it's not possible to say it never blocks implantation, James Trussell, director of the Office of Population Research at Princeton, told me, and to anti-choice hard-liners once in a thousand times is enough. But then, many things can block implantation, including breast-feeding.

Are the reverends going to come out for formula-feeding now? "It all comes down to the evils of sex," says Trussell. "That's an ideological position impervious to empirical evidence."

Pastors Computer Used For Porn Access

In Charleston, West Virginia, a man has been accused of breaking into a church and using the pastor’s computer to look at Internet pornography. Donald R. Kendrick, 29, was arrested after a scuffle with Charleston police Cpl. T. George, who was responding to a report that a light was on inside the First Presbyterian Church. George found the suspect hiding under a desk.

The man fled down a hallway, spraying George with pepper spray as he ran. The two men tumbled down a flight of stone steps during the chase, Lt. Jim Sands said. Kendrick, a resident of a Charleston shelter, suffered a broken ankle and lacerations to the head. George was treated for a knee injury and abrasions. Kendrick faces charges of charges of breaking and entering, battery on an officer and fleeing, Sands said.

Sleeping With The Enemy

Two gay Israeli men have installed a huge double bed in a New York art gallery and are inviting Arab men to become their "lover" as part of an exhibition called "Sleeping with the Enemy." But the artists who like to be known simply as Gil and Moti talk about the project in romantic terms, saying it's about "falling in love" rather than sex.

Gil said visitors should not come to the show expecting to see pornography. "The bed is there for us to live in. Artistically there are three pillows to symbolize unity of three people which goes along with the whole concept of make love not war," he said. "We try to actually open up a dialogue and debate which is about more important issues than just sexual matters and if there's sex, OK, but it's not something we're interested in discussing," Gil said.

The sales pitch for the show in which the two live and work in the gallery surrounded by their art reads: "Israeli artists Gil and Moti are gay, married and in love. For 5 weeks, they court an Arab lover."

Since late 2002 they have made contact online with as many as 300 Arab men from across the Middle East. They typically send a message through a dating site asking if they can paint a picture from the man's photo and explaining who they are.

Blackmail Regarding Affairs Being Avoided

A Chinese city has taken its fight on corruption to the bedroom, ordering officials to own up to extramarital affairs in the hope of keeping public money out of the hands of mistresses. China has tried assorted checks and balances to curb corruption which has returned alongside market reforms after being virtually wiped out when the Communist Party swept to power in 1949.

. Some 95 percent of convicted corrupt officials in China had mistresses, it said without elaborating. "In south China's economic-booming cities all the officials involved in the 102 corruption cases investigated in 1999 had mistresses.

China's leaders have warned chronic corruption could topple the Communist Party, which has controlled the world's most populous nation for more than 50 years. Almost 870,000 officials were indicted for corruption in 2004. "Although arguments exist, one fact is undeniable," Xinhua said of the Nanjing regulation. "The Chinese government and academic society are being more innovative than ever before in the field of creating new ways to prevent and control corruption."

Lawyer By Day, Porn Star By Night

Ron Miller, who appears in adult videos as "Don Hollywood," has carved out a special niche of notoriety on the fringe of Hollywood's dream factory. In a town where many long to quit their day jobs for the glamour of a career in entertainment, he has managed a unique dual track: litigator and porn star.

Miller makes his rounds at the Van Nuys courthouse three days a week with a certain extravagance of manner and a diamond ear stud that set him apart from the rumpled lawyers with whom he has shared a counsel table for the past 30 years.

At a recent court appearance, he sported a black pinstriped suit and crocodile-skin cowboy boots, with case files under his arm and a defender's zeal in his heavy-lidded blue eyes. Most of Miller's legal colleagues know about his other job. The one that sometimes sees the 56-year-old sharing a massage table with a porn starlet and cooing: "You're working on a 'get out of jail free' card," as the cameras roll.

But aside from knowing looks or good-natured jokes, Miller said his eight-year adult film career has drawn no objection from clients, colleagues or the California bar association. "There are just some places I don't want to go," Deputy District Attorney Ann Marie Wise said when asked about her opponent's avocation at a recent court hearing. Ellen R. Peck, an Escondido, California lawyer who specializes in ethics, said state rules would not bar Miller from his second career. "As long as it's legal to engage in it, I can't think of anything unethical about it," Peck said.

Miller got his break after arranging for his then-girlfriend to shoot a scene in the porn industry. "We did the scene together and I wore a ski mask to try to remain anonymous, but at the end of the scene the director ripped the mask off, and the lawyer was out of the bag, so to speak," he said. His girlfriend liked the experience so much that she quit her job as an accountant for rock bands and embraced "the lifestyle" as porn actress Brooke Hunter.

"From there Brooke started getting a fair amount of work, and around the third or fourth scene offers started coming my way," Miller said. "Her career took off and mine was off and running." The couple married three years ago and now jointly host a show on Internet radio and produce a law-themed porn series. They also film two 20-minute sex scenes each week for their Web sites -- his is dirtyoldlawyer.com, hers is unprintable in most newspapers -- at their ranch-style home in a secluded canyon of the San Fernando Valley, the heart of America's thriving porn industry.

On his Web site, Miller transforms from a groovy but respectable middle-aged lawyer to the slightly menacing, cigar-smoking swinger, Don Hollywood. One of his favorite scenarios is the young damsel in distress who comes to Don Hollywood for legal advice and ends up surrendering her virtue to pay for his services.

After Night and Hunter film a lengthy scene that featured a range of props, it's Don Hollywood's turn. He stepped in front of the camera, smoothly shed his clothes to reveal a toned but decidedly middle-aged body, and imperiously eyed the naked women sprawled before him. "Come and get a full measure of justice from this dirty old lawyer," he purred.

Police Jailed For Ignoring Rape

A Swedish court jailed two police officers for ignoring a woman's telephone plea for help for a friend who was being raped. A 19-year-old woman being subjected to a three-hour rape in the Stockholm suburb of Taby managed to alert a friend by phone and the friend dialed the police emergency number, but the communications center did not send anyone to investigate. The officer in charge and policeman who took the call in April last year were jailed for a month and a third was fined. Their lawyers said it was a "misunderstanding" and that the call did not make it clear exactly where the rape was taking place.

Prostitute Union

Hundreds of thousands of prostitutes working in Spain urgently need labor rights to prevent them from being exploited, one of Spain's most prominent union leaders said. "This is a strong, powerful sector, and one that is growing," said Jose Maria Fidalgo, general secretary of Workers' Commissions, one of Spain's two major national trade unions.

"In a civilized country, we cannot tolerate a non-regulated sector where hundreds of thousands of people, particularly women and immigrants, are being exploited," he told journalists ahead of a May 26 conference on rights for sex workers the union is organizing. Carmen Bravo, the union's head of women's issues, said estimates of the number of prostitutes active in Spain ranged from 300,000 to 400,000. More than 90 percent are immigrants and the majority work in roadside brothels.

Police raids on this type of establishment frequently turn up large numbers of eastern European or African women being held in conditions of near slavery, having been brought into the country by traffickers. "The sector is growing relentlessly," Bravo said. Figures on how much the industry is worth are hard to come by, she added. "But we're talking about astronomical figures."

One study estimated a national newspaper was making 6 million euros ($7.7 million) a year from selling advertising space for sex services. Next week's conference involves political parties, social and legal experts and sex workers themselves. The union hopes it will pave the way for legislation for the sector, which it says is the only way to protect workers.

Female Teachers Told To Cover Up

Women teachers at a school in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar have been told to wear aprons so that senior male students do not get distracted by their bodies, Indian newspapers reported. "The unconscious exposure of a body by a lady teacher during teaching could be an object of amusement for male students inside the classroom,"

K.C. Satpathy, the principal of DAV Public School, was quoted in The Times of India newspaper as saying. "By wearing an apron, the quality of teaching could improve." Satpathy said the decision by the school in the eastern city was the result of a two-year study that showed adolescent boys in higher classes were "losing concentration" inside the classrooms of some female teachers.

In India, many women teachers wear saris which can cover up as well as reveal a woman's figure, depending on how they are worn. Women's groups are outraged. "What does the principal expect? Should women teachers come to classes clad in burqas?" Katuri Mohapatra, a woman's activist said..

Race Horses Winning On Viagra?

Italian police have discovered a mob-linked race track where they say horses were pumped full of Viagra and other drugs to fix races. The illegally built and operated track, known locally as "Miss Charmet," is located on the outskirts of Naples city -- home to the Camorra, the local version of the Sicilian Mafia.

"We are able to ascertain the use of the famous (drug) Viagra to increase the performance of these horses," police commander Mario Pantano told local television. It was not clear how Viagra affected the horses' speed. The track and its horses, worth an estimated 5 million euros ($6.4 million), were seized by authorities investigating illegal doping of horses, according to local media.
