Gay Men Can't Donate Sperm Anonymously

To the dismay of gay-rights activists, the Food and Drug Administration is about to implement new rules recommending that any man who has engaged in homosexual sex in the previous five years be barred from serving as an anonymous sperm donor.

The FDA has rejected calls to scrap the provision, insisting that gay men collectively pose a higher-than-average risk of carrying the AIDS virus. Critics accuse the FDA of stigmatizing all gay men rather than adopting a screening process that focuses on high-risk sexual behavior by any would-be donor, gay or straight.

"Under these rules, a heterosexual man who had unprotected sex with HIV-positive prostitutes would be OK as a donor one year later, but a gay man in a monogamous, safe-sex relationship is not OK unless he's been celibate for five years,'' said Leland Traiman, director of a clinic in Alameda, Calif., that seeks gay sperm donors. Traiman said adequate safety assurances can be provided by testing a sperm donor at the time of the initial donation, then freezing the sperm for a six-month quarantine and testing the donor again to be sure there is no new sign of HIV or other infectious diseases.

Kevin Cathcart, executive director of Lambda Legal, has called it "policy based on bigotry.'' "The part I find most offensive - and a little frightening - is that it isn't based on good science,'' Cathcart said.

The FDA rules do not prohibit gay men from serving as "directed'' sperm donors. If a woman wishing to become pregnant knows a gay man and asks that he provide sperm for artificial insemination, a clinic could provide that service even if the man had engaged in sex with other men within five years.

Spokane Washington Mayor Involved in Sex Abuse

After three years of investigation, the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington, presented a package of stories that include allegations of sexual misconduct by the city's mayor, Jim West.

The probe grew out of the paper's reporting on a sex-abuse scandal in the Catholic Church in 2002. Rumors circulated then that West had sexually molested young boys when he served as a Boy Scout leader (and a sheriff's deputy) in the late 1970s. Two of his closest friends then, one a sheriff's deputy and the other a Scout leader, committed suicide after those earlier allegations of sex abuse were raised.

Today, the newspaper revealed that Robert J. Galliher claimed in a court deposition that West molested him in the mid-1970s, when he was a boy. A second man, Michael G. Grant Jr., also accused West of sexual abuse during the same period at a Boy Scout.

According to reports, West had been using his position in the Legislature to block gay-rights legislation while he has been trolling the Internet for young lovers while serving as mayor of Spokane, offering gifts and favors.

An article opened this way: "In an Internet chat room last New Year’s Eve where he discussed his recent date with an 18-year-old man, Spokane Mayor Jim West criticized the 'sex Nazis' who try to regulate private sexual behavior. For years, that’s exactly what West tried to do in Olympia [the state capital[]."

"This is not a story about sexual orientation. This is a story about alleged sexual abuse of children and misuse of power and authority. Using the trappings of office to lure and groom young sex partners, barely of legal age, is the public's business whether those potential partners are men or women."

Sexual Orientation Discrimination At Work

Last week, Microsoft found itself caught in the crosshairs of America's culture wars. The software company is widely regarded as a progressive employer, and has offered benefits to the partners of its gay and lesbian workers since 1993. Earlier this year, it toughened up its anti-discrimination policy still further to cover "gender identity or expression", including transsexuals and transvestites.

But in a widely reported decision, Microsoft recently withdrew its support for a bill that would have made it illegal to discriminate against gays and lesbians in its home state of Washington. The company had supported a similar bill a year earlier, and its decision to take a "neutral" position caused uproar and drew accusations that it had bowed to the demands of religious conservatives.

The company admits it met with a local church group at least twice over its potential support of the anti-discrimination bill. Ken Hutcherson, the pastor of the Antioch Bible Church, who has organized rallies opposing same-sex marriages, told the New York Times that Microsoft had "backed off" after he threatened a national boycott of its products. "I told them I was going to give them something to be afraid of Christians about," he said.

He also demanded that two Microsoft employees who testified in support of the bill on their own behalf be fired, and that the company issue a statement against the legislation. Microsoft did neither. Nevertheless, the ensuing storm caught it unaware.

The company has lent its support to social issues in the past. It filed a letter to the courts in support for the University of Michigan's right to use affirmative action in its admission policies, and also took a stand locally in favor of increasing the Washington state sales tax by $1bn (£520m) to help improve education. This time, though, Microsoft said it had decided to narrow its lobbying focus to a smaller number of bills directly affecting its business.

It is clear that Microsoft failed to recognized how far its decision would be scrutinized in the present charged atmosphere. The company perhaps also misjudged how important corporations are to the gay and lesbian community in the absence of government protection. Not only are politicians at state and federal level seeking to outlaw same-sex marriages and civil unions, but it is also still legal to fire someone for being gay in dozens of states. The bill in Washington State was again defeated by one vote.

Another Political Hypocrite

Another GOP adulterous hypocrite: Rep. Sherwood was in alleged long-term extramarital affair when he voted for the 2004 “Marriage Protection Act” at the same time he was allegedly involved in ongoing an extramarital affair with a woman half his age.

The affair came to light when the girlfriend called the DC police claiming that Sherwood assaulted her: Police responded to a 911 call on Sept. 15 from Cynthia Ore, 29, of Rockville, Md. She locked herself in a bathroom in Sherwood’s D Street apartment and told operators that Sherwood “choked her for no apparent reason” while giving her a backrub.

Ore said that she and Sherwood, who is married, have had an ongoing relationship since 1999, when the two met at a Young Republicans meeting. Sherwood has refused to specify the nature of their relationship, calling Ore “an acquaintance.”

As an adulterer who voted for a measure that supposedly protects the sanctity of marriage, Rep. Sherwood is in illustrious company. Then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich helped move the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) through the House of Representatives in 1996 while simultaneously conducting an adulterous affair with an aide. His counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, left his first wife for another woman, whom he gave a do-nothing job on his Senate staff. Additionally on DOMA, Rep. Bob Barr, who drafted the legislation, has been married three times. Rep. Bob Livingstone, who was tapped to take the Speakership from Gingrich, lost the position when it was revealed he had been involved in multiple kink-filled orgies, to which his wife was not invited, while supporting the GOP “values” agenda.

When asked about the political future for Rep. Sherwood - who allegedly physically abused his girlfriend and appears to be a typical hypocritical adulterous GOP sleazebag - Marge Matisko, an activist with the Luzerne County [PA] Republican Party said: “The congressman is a family man. When I think about family values, I think about the Don Sherwoods and Rick Santorums of the world.” On that last point, Ms. Matisko, we wholeheartedly agree.

Bush Cracking Down On Obscenity

According to a report on CNN the Bush administration is "cracking down hard" on obscenity. Wouldn't "obscenity" be a little bit like art and one human's attraction toward another? Sort of like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the old saying goes. Who decides what is or isn't obscene, because frankly, a pair of breasts or someone spanking another are far less obscene to some than having to live under a corrupt administration and government, which have no regard for American values, the Constitution, democracy or the American people.

While Bush is busy "cracking down" on what turns people on, it leaves one to ponder what is, or isn't truly obscene. What about the government - Bush and Republicans denying it, as we all know now, doesn't make it so - sanctioning, approving and encouraging torture; isn't that obscene?

How about all the photos from Abu Ghraib Prison, with inmates being led around by dog leashes, would people consider that obscene? If not, then what about the people stripped naked, smeared in their own feces - at least one hopes, if nothing else it was theirs - and made to stand arms spread out to the side; could that be obscene?

Maybe too, it is possible that a few people here 'n there, might consider it obscene that a naked man is forced to stand on a box, arms spread out like Jesus on the cross, black hood over his face and with electrical wires connected to his giblets.

And just maybe... they might consider "cracking down" on some of their own obscenities, before worrying about what mature consenting Americans are watching behind closed doors.

Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Soon-to-be-approved vaccines against the virus that may cause most cases of cervical cancer may be opposed and lead to many preventable deaths. The trouble is that the human papilloma virus (HPV) is sexually transmitted. So to prevent infection, girls will have to be vaccinated before they become sexually active, which could be a problem in many countries.

In the US, for instance, religious groups are gearing up to oppose vaccination, despite a survey showing 80 per cent of parents favor vaccinating their daughters. "Abstinence is the best way to prevent HPV," says Bridget Maher of the Family Research Council, a leading Christian lobby group that has made much of the fact that, because it can spread by skin contact, condoms are not as effective against HPV as they are against other viruses such as HIV.

"Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a license to engage in premarital sex," Maher claims, though it is arguable how many young women have even heard of the virus.

Meanwhile in developing countries, where 80 per cent of deaths from cervical cancer occur, social taboos may be even more powerful. The head of the Indian Council of Medical Research, N. K. Ganguly, says it will take a big educational effort to convince parents.

Vaccinating men could be the best way to prevent the spread of HPV among women. HPV is extremely common. Half of all sexually active women between 18 and 22 in the US are infected. Most cases clear up, but sometimes infection persists and can cause cancer decades later.

Deaths in the west have plummeted thanks to widespread screening to detect cancers early. But such screening is not widely available in developing countries. In many, populations are aging: in India the number of women over 60 is projected to rise from 40 million now to 168 million in 2050.

Vaginal Cream May Be Harmful To Face

A guest on the television talk show "Oprah" recently shared her secret to fighting facial wrinkles: vaginal cream. "I have been putting Premarin vaginal cream on my face for 20 years, and it works," said Vicki Mackarvich.

Maryland dermatologist Dr. Irving Wolfe said estrogen in Premarin causes irritation to the skin. Wolfe explained Premarin works by "producing a little bit of inflammation, which puffs the skin up temporarily and makes the wrinkles disappear."

Premarin isn't the only thing Mackarvich uses on her face. "I use that with Preparation H for puffiness, dryness around your eyes. I use that every night, it really seems to work," Mackarvich said. Well, Preparation H does reduce swelling, but Hoffman said it contains steroids.

"The fact is, the skin under the eyes is very, very sensitive. If you notice a lot of medicines, say 'not around your eyes. So, I have significant concerns because I believe it has some steroid cream in it and steroid cream thins the skin and it may actually bring out dark circles and things like that," Hoffman said.

Oral Sex Causes Crash

Police in Romania were shocked to find a car crash was caused because a couple were having oral sex while driving. The driver lost control on a crowded road in Craiova, Dolj county, and collided with an oncoming car.

The young man, whose identity was not revealed, admitted to police that he was having a "hell of a time" at the time of the crash. Police said the couple were still in their car, fully naked, when officers reached the scene of the accident. The couple were found completely naked in their car by police officers who came to investigate.

A police spokesperson said: "We couldn't believe our eyes but it was the naked truth. "They were having sex while driving. We hope they have learned their lesson now - not to do anything distracting while driving." Three persons needed medical help after the crash.

Striptease An Art In Norway

Striptease is art like opera or ballet, an Oslo court has ruled in a victory for nightclub owners over Norway's tax authorities. "I'm very pleased. Ninety percent of the guests here tell me that what I'm doing is art," a female stripper at the Dream Go Go Bar in the city of Trondheim.

The court ruled this week that striptease should be treated like other artistic stage shows, ranging from stand-up comedy to opera, for which tickets are exempt from value-added tax (VAT). Tax authorities had demanded more than 1.0 million Norwegian crowns ($159,500) from the Blue Angel club in Oslo in unpaid VAT, arguing that strippers were not artists and so tickets to their shows were subject to VAT, normally 25 percent.

Lawyers for the Blue Angel, which contested the VAT demands, argued that undressing as nurses, police women or flamenco dancers demonstrated artistic flair. Tax authority lawyers said audiences were attracted to the shows by nudity, not art. "Of course stripping is art," Magnus Morland, owner of the String Show Bar in Oslo. He said the ruling would let clubs operate with better margins and did not rule out cutting the 150 Norwegian crowns ($23.93) entry fee.
