How Penis Sleeves Work

Penis sleeves (penis extenders) are designed to provide men with added length and girth to their penis. They are often ribbed or textured to provide additional stimulation to a partner. Sometimes, they have a vibrator attached to them to increase blood flow to the penis and stimulate a partner's clitoris perineum or anus. See our How To Choose A Vibrator Guide for more information.

Penis sleeves are particularly good for those who experience premature ejaculation as they act as a natural desensitizer by covering the head of a man's penis.

Penis sleeves are also used by placing them over dildos to make the dildo bigger or softer. For example, some like using them over dildos that are metal or glass to give a different feel to them, while others enjoy just making their current dildo larger.

How to Use a Penis Extender

  • The best way to put them on is to roll them on to create suction inside the penis extender.

  • You can opt to use lubricant inside of them to create an additional sensation; however, too much lubricant can cause it to slip, so make sure that if you use lubricant inside that, you use small amounts. See which lubricants to use based on the material it is made out of through our lubricant guide.

  • Additional penis rings can help hold a penis sleeve in place. Make sure only to use penis rings for short amounts of time. Please read our Penis Rings Guide for more information.

  • Realistically, a man will have decreased sensitivity from extenders that cover the head of their penis; however, pressure from squeezing is still felt.

  • Penis extenders are not typically for men with erectile dysfunction (ED); they are usually soft and do not typically provide the rigid support of a penis ring or hollow dildo. Some are rigid, so it depends on the style as some are firm and are even designed for men with ED. See penis extenders here. Also, see sex toys for men with erectile dysfunction for more information.

  • Penis sleeves should not be used as condoms as many of them are made with porous materials which would not protect against unwanted pregnancy or STDs.

  • Latex condoms will chemically interact with the materials that many penis sleeves are made out of (elastomer TPE/TPR). This means that it is best not to depend on a condom if you use it with a penis sleeve, as the material may degrade. A polyurethane or lambskin condom may be better, but there has not been testing to determine safety.

Penis Extender Materials

Because they need to stretch, penis extenders typically are made with an elastomer such as TPE or TPR. This makes them very stretchy and accommodating to any sized penis. One of the drawbacks of this material is that it can easily tear and has microscopic pores that make disinfecting it difficult.

Please see our guides on this material for more information:

Penis Stretcher Extenders

In addition to penis extenders, there are also penis enlargers (stretchers) which can also be categorized as penis extenders. These penis extenders are designed to increase blood flow to the penis to create larger, firmer, longer-lasting erections. They have also been used for Peyronie's disease to aid in straightening the penis as well as improve the quality of erections. We recommend discussing using these penis extenders with your physician before using them to determine if they are right for you.
