Flowers, Sex Toy Materials

We specialize in selling body safe sex toys as well as the education of safe sex toy materials. Thus, we have a comprehensive list of all the most popular materials used in sex toys, lingerie, personal lubricants, and other sexually related products. Make sure to see our How To Clean Sex Toys Guide for the best way to care for your sex toys.

Acetate

Acetate is a manufactured fiber that is low in cost and has good draping qualities. Properties of acetate have promoted it as the 'beauty fiber.' Acetate is used in fabrics such as satins, brocades, and taffetas to accentuate luster, body, drape, and beauty.

  • Example: Fabrics used in lingerie

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: It is hypoallergenic.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Acetate usually requires dry cleaning.

Acrylic

Sold by the trade names Plexiglas, Limacryl, R-Cast, Perspex, Plazcryl, Acrylex, Acrylite, Acrylplast, Altuglas, Polycast, Oroglass, and Lucite and is commonly called acrylic glass or only acrylic. Acrylic, or acrylic fiber, can also refer to polymers or copolymers containing polyacrylonitrile. Acrylic is tough and durable, and because it is often clear, it simulates glass.

  • Example: A variety of acrylic sex toys exist, such as dildos and butt plugs. They are commonly used for constructing residential and commercial aquariums, spectator protection in ice hockey stadiums, and motorcycle helmet visors.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Nontoxic in this form. Phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Smooth and nonporous, acrylic is easy to clean with soap & water or antibacterial sex toy cleaners. The material is solid and is nearly indestructible. However, be careful putting it on abrasive surfaces as acrylic is easily scratched.

  • Recycling Level: Acrylic plastic is not easily recycled. It is considered a group 7 plastic among recycled plastics and is not collected for recycling in most communities. Large pieces can be reformed into other useful objects if they have not suffered too much stress, crazing, or cracking, but this accounts for only a very small portion of the acrylic plastic waste. In a landfill, acrylic plastics, like many other plastics, are not readily biodegradable. Some acrylic plastics are highly flammable and must be protected from sources of combustion.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

AquaGel

AquaGel is a trademarked name for some adult toys made of jelly rubber. Jelly rubber is made of polyvinyl chloride with added softening agents.

  • Example: Jelly toys come in a variety of colors. They are smooth with a tacky feel and typically have a strong rubber odor and taste.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some jelly rubber toys may contain phthalates, a chemical used to soften plastics linked to several environmental and individual health issues. If you are considering purchasing a jelly sex toy. In that case, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates or purchasing from a store such as Holistic Wisdom, Inc. that is committed to offering only body safe sex toys. Jelly rubber is also very porous and can easily harbor bacteria. If you use these sex toys, you may want to use a polyurethane condoms that are non-lubricated or have a waterbased (not silicone based on toy material) lubricant over them to reduce the risk of exposure to harmful bacteria or toxins. Make sure to check the brand of lubricant as not all waterbased lubricants are compatible with polyurethane condoms.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Jelly Rubber Cleaning

ABS Plastic

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or ABS, is a common thermoplastic used to make light, rigid, molded products.

  • Example: Some sex toys are made from ABS plastic. An example is the Naughtinano. Many other products are made of ABS plastic such as piping, musical instruments, golf club heads, and toys, including LEGO bricks.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: ABS plastic is nonporous, phthalate-free and hypoallergenic.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Wash waterproof ABS plastic sex toys with soap and water. Taking care to lather them well for 30 seconds. ABS Plastic can also be sprayed down with a sex toy cleaner and rinsed off. If there are electrical components and it is not waterproof you can wipe it clean. Sometimes ABS plastic can indicate that it has a PU coat, which means that it has a polyurethane coating. ABS plastic can tolerate rubbing alcohol, but it may turn it yellowish and change its color; it may also damage polyurethane (PU coat) finishes, so we do not recommend it.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased, Silicone.

  • Recycling: Common plastics polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) do not have recycling numbers. The fall under the category "other" and cannot be recycled.

Better Than Real

Better Than Real is a trademarked name for a line of adult toys made of synthetic rubber. Rubber is an elastic hydrocarbon polymer that occurs naturally as sap from various plants but in this case it is synthetically reproduced.

  • Example: Better than real toys come in a variety of colors. They are smooth with a tacky feel and taste and smell like rubber.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Synthetic rubber can contain phthalates; however, it depends on the type of rubber. Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are used to soften rubbers and plastics. This would be classified as an elastomer, make sure to see the material descriptor elastomer for more information.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Jelly Rubber Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased only.

Brocade

Brocade is a richly decorative, shuttle-woven fabric, often made in colored silks and with or without gold and silver threads. The name, related to the same root as the word broccoli, comes from Spanish brocado, from Italian broccato meaning embossed cloth.

  • Example: Used in silk brocade sex toy storage bags and lingerie.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: None Known

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Dry clean or hand wash with cold water separately.

BioShield75

BioShield75 is a fabric surface protectant containing antimicrobial compounds that inhibit cell growth, reduce the multiplication of bacteria, mold, and fungi while preserving the life of the treated product. One end of its molecule creates a strong bond to the fabric to form a highly durable coating. The other end of the molecule forms a microscopic bed of positively charged spikes that attract and puncture microbes like a magnetic bed of nails. BioShield®75 physically ruptures the cell walls of microbes WITHOUT the use of poisons.

  • Example: Sugar Saks, a sex toy storage/separation bag, is lined with fabric treated with BioShield®75. Other uses for Bioshield are hospital lab coats, shower curtains, and gurney covers.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Bioshield is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free. It does not adversely affect humans.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Sugar Saks can be washed on a gentle cycle with cold water. Bioshield protects the inside of the bag for up to 50 washes.

Ceramic

Ceramics are made by heating refined clay in the form of kaolinite between 1200 and 1400 degrees Celsius. Properties associated with ceramic include high strength, hardness, high durability, high resistance to thermal shock, so you can warm it or cool it according to your preferences. Ceramic used in sex toy manufacturing is vitrified to make it nonporous.

  • Example: Ceramic Dildos

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some ceramics can contain lead and verify that nothing toxic is within the ceramic or the glaze.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Clean your ceramic sex toys with warm soapy water after each use, then rinse it thoroughly and dry it. Please keep it in the storage pouch. You can apply the same cleaning methods to your ceramic toys as you would to ceramic tableware; however, do not apply or use rough, abrasive, or metallic scrubbers. Do not subject your ceramic sex toy to extreme temperatures or temperature changes. If you drop your ceramic sex toy, do not use it if it becomes cracked or chipped. Never put it in the oven or microwave. We recommend only using moderate temperatures, always whether cleaning or using.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased

  • Recycling Level: Not likely to be recyclable.

Chiffon

From the French word for a cloth or rag, chiffon is a lightweight, balanced plain-woven sheer fabric woven of high-twist yarns.

  • Example: Lingerie

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: None known.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Dry Clean. You may hand wash; however, it may stretch the fabric and not return to its original shape depending on which type of chiffon it is.

  • Recycling Level: Best when reused.

Chrome Alloy

Chrome Alloy is a strong alloy metal with one or more other elements and 10.5% or more chromium content. It does not stain and is heat and chemical-resistant. It is not only durable and will last a lifetime but is also pretty to regard. This material may be heated or cooled to suit your desire.

  • Example: High-quality sex toys such as Chrome Dildos are made of chrome alloy. Some other common uses of this material are automobile rims/wheels and surgical needles. Also, see stainless steel toys.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Chrome alloy is hypoallergenic and non-toxic. This material has no pores and cannot absorb bacteria. When it is sanitized, it is unable to transmit infection, disease, or smell.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Metal Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

Crystalessence

Crystalessence is a trademarked name for a line of adult toys made of elastomer jelly rubber. Jelly rubber is made of polyvinyl chloride with added softening agents.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some jelly rubber toys may contain phthalates, a chemical used to soften plastics that has been linked to several environmental and individual health issues. If you are considering purchasing a jelly sex toy, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates or purchasing from a store such as Holistic Wisdom, Inc. that is committed to offering only body safe sex toys. Crystalessence is very porous and can easily harbor bacteria.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomer Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased only.

Cybersilicone

Cybersilicone is a trademarked name for some sex toys made of TPR (Thermoplastic Rubber) silicone, a blend of silicone and rubber. TPR Silicone begins as a soft material with the ability to be made into products of varying degrees of hardness. See product information and possible health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

Cyberskin

Cyberskin is a trademarked name for a variation soft thermoplastic elastomer, a polyvinyl chloride, and a silicone mixture. TPE is a polymer that has many uses, one being sex toys. Many sex toys are made of Cyberskin, especially men's masturbation sleeves, as they provide a realistic feeling designed to mimic skin.

  • Example: Some sex toys are made from Cybersilicone.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Cyberskin is phthalate-free. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: These realistic sex toys can harbor bacteria because of their pores, making them one of the more difficult sex toys to keep clean. They also require powder to keep them dry and realistic feeling when not in use. Many sex toy retailers sell this powder as Cyberskin powder, but it is simply cornstarch that you can pick up at your grocery store.

Many realistic sex toys use softening agents, which will break down over time, so they are not durable and will not last very long. The best thing you can use to clean them is a sex toy cleaner. Some say you can use a mild soap, but the problem with soap is that it goes into the pores and then froths up again once you put lubricant in it if you have not gotten the soap all out, and getting it all out is challenging.

Toy cleaners go into the pores and are more easily rinsed out as it does not adhere, froth or get reactivated as easily as soap. If you do use soap, avoid harsh soaps as they may damage your sex toy. We suggest that you use a sex toy cleaner, spray it on generously, let it soak in for ten minutes, then rinse it off well and let it air dry.

Making sure your sex toy dries adequately is very important because if you leave unwanted moisture in it, this will increase the chances of mold, mildew, fungus, and bacterial build-up.

Once it is dry, you can then sprinkle the Cyberskin powder on it; again those are made with corn starch. For the purest form, we recommend that you buy organic corn starch at your local health food store. Be sure to stay away from using talcum or baby powder as these have been linked to a possible cause of ovarian cancer.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Use only water-based lubricants with Cyberskin. Silicone or petroleum-based oils will damage this material. Some consumers use condoms over them but if you do make sure it is an unlubricated or waterbased lubricated polyurethane condom as latex condoms will break down when used with elastomers and silicone lubricants (which most lubricated condoms use) will break down the elastomer material as well. Make sure to check the brand of lubricant as not all waterbased lubricants are compatible with polyurethane condoms.

Elastomers

Elastomers are not materials; rather, they describe how elastic and flexible a polymer is (material). When a sex toy is described as an elastomer, it typically refers to materials such a TPR, TPE, silicone, rubber, or PVC. Materials with elastomeric properties have additives put in them to make them soft.

Plastics like PVC have plasticizers added to them to make them soft, turning them into elastomers. Unfortunately, many of those are harmful to one's health, such as phthalates, Bisphenol A with its equally dangerous cousins Bisphenol S or F. Many companies have moved away from using such harmful additives such as those and now use safer alternatives. Elastomers are often used in sex toys because they feel so close to skin and are squishy, stretchy, and soft.

  • Example: Many of the sex toys for men, specifically masturbation sleeves, are made of TPR or TPE as they have a very stretchy skin-like feel to them.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Please see our Elastomers & Porous Sex Toys Guide

  • Cleaning Recommendations: We do not recommend using soap and water with elastomer sex toys as the soap can get into the pores of the sex toy and not be able to get out. This can mean that the next time you use the sex toy and put lubricant on it can create a frothy soap mixture.

If you use condoms on elastomer sex toys, use unlubricated or waterbased lubricated polyurethane condoms. We specifically recommend these types of condoms because there are traces of oils in elastomers that can break down latex condoms, and silicone lubricants (which most condoms come lubricated with) will also break down elastomers. Make sure to check the brand of lubricant as not all waterbased lubricants are compatible with polyurethane condoms.

We highly recommend using sex toy cleaners for these sex toys. First, rinse them with water, then spray on the sex toy cleaner. Rinse off thoroughly and let completely air dry. Store in a bag or container that allows air to get to it as it may be dry to the touch, but it may still have some residual moisture in it, causing bacteria, mold, or fungus growth. See our How To Clean Sex Toys Guide for more information.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Elastomers are compatible with waterbased lubricants.

Elaspan

Elaspan is a trademarked name for spandex. Elaspan is a synthetic fiber known for its stretchability. The material is also known as Elastane. This material is very lightweight and can be stretched over 500% without breaking and retaining its original shape.

  • Example: Some lingerie is made of Elaspan. Elaspan is resistant to body oils, perspiration, lotions, and detergents. Other common uses of this material are swimwear, foundation garments, and cycling shorts.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: None

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Elaspan should be cleaned with mild lingerie detergent and cool water and air-dried. It is recommended that you do not boil, bleach, or dry this material in a dryer.

Faux-Leather

Faux-leather or vegan leather (artificial leather, synthetic leather) is a synthetic fiber from a polyurethane group made to be an artificial leather like material. Polyurethane may be washed, dry-cleaned, and does allow some air to flow through. This material is not to be confused with Pleather, derived from PVC, and cannot be washed and does not allow air to flow through.

  • Example: Faux leather is a water-resistant, durable material used to mimic animal leather for clothing and other items.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: None

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Faux-leather may be hand-washed with a mild soap, warm water, and a soft cloth or dry-cleaned.

Feathers

Feathers are a bird's outer covering and plumage or can be synthetically produced to emulate bird feathers. Feathers are flexible and soft and often used as a tickler.

  • Example: Feathers can be used as a sexual aid as a soft tickler. Examples of a sexual aid made of feathers are our feather ticklers.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Feathers can be an allergen, although it is rare. Typically, a person is allergic to the dust mites that feathers can harbor and not the feather itself. We recommend that you check with your doctor if you believe you may have an allergy to feathers before using products made with feathers.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Feathers are very fragile and cannot withstand being washed. Instead of washing, try a baby's hairbrush to remove dust and clean debris from the feather. The hairbrush should be the softest type, meant for newborn babies.

Food-Grade Vinyl

Food-Grade Vinyl is polyvinyl chloride (plastic). The food-grade PVCs are vinyl plastics used to make food containers, food storage baggies, and some sex toys. The food-grade PVC contains softeners that allow the material to be pliable and soft.

There are different grades of vinyls, from food grade for your plastic food storage containers or baggies (which don't give off a smell) to economical grades used in some lower-end athletic shoes and other products.

You can tell the grade of the vinyl and quantity of plasticizers (phthalates) used by the smell. The more you smell, the lower the grade. You are probably aware of the terrible chemical smell that many jelly vibrators give off. This is the vinyl off-gassing large amounts of the softners which may be plasticizers such as phthalates. Quality PVC products to do not use harmful plasticizers to soften their vinyl.

The FDA or EPA does not regulate the adult industry, so there are no standards that are currently followed for adult novelties. These government agencies regulate children's toys, and they no longer allow phthalates in children's toys or pacifiers. All of the products that we carry are phthalate-free and body safe sex toys.

  • Example: Holistic Wisdom carries only high-quality, food-grade vinyl sex toys that are free of plasticizers such as phthalates. Not only are they safe, but they are soft and pliable yet hard enough to feel great. Because food grade vinyl sex toys are more porous, they will not last as long as toys made of silicone such as the ones found here. Please be aware that some stores and online companies sell sex toys made a very low-grade version of this material. It is important to make sex toy purchases from companies you can trust are selling products made from high-grade food-grade vinyl.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Our high-end food-grade vinyl sex toys are hypoallergenic and phthalate-free. See more under PVC materials.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Food grade vinyl sex toys are easy to clean with soap & water or antibacterial sex toy cleaner.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased

Futurotic & Futurotic Plus

Futurotic is a trademarked brand of a softened variation of thermoplastic elastomer, a blend of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. Futurotic is similar to Cyberskin in texture and feel but may contain phthalates, a chemical blend used for softening.

  • Example: Some examples are automobile airbag covers, yoga mats, and medical catheters.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Futurotic may not be phthalate-free. If you are considering purchasing a Futurotic sex toy, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Cyberskin Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Use only water-based lubricants with Futurotic products. Silicone or petroleum-based oils will damage this material.

Jelly Rubber

Jelly rubber is made of polyvinyl chloride with added softening agents and is considered an elastomer.

  • Example: Sex toys made out of this material are called jelly sex toys.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some jelly rubber toys may contain phthalates, a chemical used to soften plastics linked to several environmental and individual health issues; also see elastomers. If you are considering purchasing a jelly sex toy, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates or purchasing from a store such as us as we are committed to only offering only body safe sex toys.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: We recommend sex toy cleaners for jelly sex toys but understand that they will only disinfect the jelly sex toy on the surface as they are primarily porous. Understand that soap and water and sex toy cleaners will not sterilize them. Do not use harsh chemicals with them, and if you have a jelly sex toy and are not sure if it has phthalates in it, you can always put a condom over them for added protection.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased.

Metal

Metal is an element that forms cations and has metallic bonds. It typically has a high shine and is non-toxic. Metal does not stain and is heat and chemical-resistant. It is not only durable and will last a lifetime but is also pretty to look at. This material may be heated or cooled to suit your desire.

  • Example: Metal is used to make some high-quality metal adult toys. Some of the other uses of metal are vehicles, appliances, and tools.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Metal is phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Metal is nonporous, so clean up is very easy. You can use a 10% bleach solution in cold water only for 90 seconds. Do not use hot water and do not leave it soaking longer than this as bleach can corrode stainless steel. You can boil them and use a mild soap and water.

We do not recommend a dishwasher as some rinse agents are harmful to some metals. If you do use a dishwasher wash using only water. You should also not use jewelry cleaners on them. Ensure that you dry your metal sex toy carefully.

If you heat a metal sex toy by boiling it or put it in the dishwasher, always test the temperature before picking it up or using it for sex play as metal can burn the skin at high heat. Remember, it holds its heat very well.

Be careful when buying metal toys, as some may not be body safe. Some popular sex toys are listed as stainless steel but have copper underneath their surface, which means they are not real stainless steel. Quality metal will not have pits or rough patches in them; rather, they will have a mirror finish like chrome.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased, Hybrids, Oil & Silicone

  • Recycling Level: Metal can be recycled.

Poly-melt is a nontoxic semi-organic polymer used to make some adult toys. This material is smooth, non-porous, and water repellent.

  • Example: Poly-melt is used to make some adult toys. Other uses for Poly-melt are make-up prosthetics and building materials.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Poly-melt is claimed to be hypoallergenic and phthalate-free. We have not lab verified this claim.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: This material can be easily sterilized between uses. Poly-melt is easy to clean with soap & water, antibacterial sex toy cleaners.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased Lubricants

Polyamide

A polyamide is a polymer containing monomers of amides joined by peptide bonds that can occur naturally, such as wool or produced synthetically as in nylon.

  • Example: Polyamide is commonly used to make lingerie. Some of the other many uses are wool clothing and stockings.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Polyamide is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Materials made of Polyamide can be washed with mild detergent and warm water.

Polyester

Polyester is in a category of polymers. Typically, polyester refers to cloth woven from polyester fiber. Polyester tends to have a low absorbency factor and is wrinkle resistant. Examples of woven polyester fabrics are clothing, lingerie, bed sheets, comforters, and curtains. Polyesters are also widely used to finish high-quality wood products such as guitars, pianos, and vehicle interiors.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Polyester is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Polyester can be washed with mild detergent and water.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer used in a variety of applications and is FDA-approved. It is considered one of the safest plastics. Polypropylene is derived from petroleum, and toxicity various from product to product based on each product’s manufacturing process. Some polypropylene products affect androgen hormones and cause cells' toxic or stress response.
  • Example: Polypropylene is used to make reusable containers, thermal underwear, and a medical material used in hernia repair.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Polypropylene is hypoallergenic, BPA and phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See ABS Plastic For Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased, OIl, Hybrids & Silicone

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a polymer consisting of a chain of organic units joined by urethane links. Polyurethane formulations cover a wide range of stiffness, hardness, and densities. This material can be made into very soft, flexible, and elastic items such as condoms and some adult toys.

  • Example: Some condoms are made of polyurethane as an alternative to latex.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Polyurethane is hypoallergenic and does not promote the growth of bacteria. Also, phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Polyurethane can be easily cleaned with mild soap & water or antibacterial sex toy cleaners.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Depends On Brand: See more information about Polyurethane condoms and lubricants for compatibility.

Private Touch

Private Touch is a trademarked name for a variation of softened thermoplastic elastomer, a blend of polyvinyl chloride and silicone, and other chemicals. Private Touch is similar to Cyberskin in texture and feel but may contain phthalates, a chemical blend used for softening. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

PVC

PVC is the name for a plastic made of polyvinyl chloride. PVC is lightweight, water-resistant, long-lasting, and the most commonly used plastic today. Some PVC can contain phthalates, however not all do. If the PVC is made with food-grade vinyl, then it is phthalate-free. PVC softeners made from harmful plasticizers such as phthalates, Bisphenol A with its equally dangerous cousins Bisphenol S or F or not recommended, and we do not carry them.

  • Example: An example of PVC is food-grade vinyl. Because food grade vinyl sex toys are more porous, they will not last as long as toys are made of silicone. Please be aware that some stores and online companies sell sex toys made a very low-grade version of this material, which are much more porous and easily contaminated by bacteria. It is important to make sex toys purchases from companies you can trust are selling products made from high-grade food-grade vinyl.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Our high-end PVC (food-grade vinyl) sex toys are phthalate-free. We recommend using an inexpensive, low-quality PVC (food-grade vinyl) sex toy purchased elsewhere, that you use a condom with the toy to prevent the spread of bacteria and possible infection or disease.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Food Grade Vinyl For Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

  • Recycling Level: PVC cannot be recycled.

Pyrex Glass

Pyrex is a trademarked name for borosilicate glass. Borosilicate is made by adding boron into the mixture of sand, soda, and ground lime. The material is nonporous and extremely smooth. Pyrex Glass is not as dense as ordinary glass; therefore, it is much more resistant to breaking and shattering. If it were to break, it would not shatter into tiny pieces but would snap or break in large pieces. This material is exceptionally durable. Our glass toys are annealed Pyrex® glass that is hand blown using patented designs called Borosilicate (German Schott). For more information see our Glass Sex Toys Guide.

  • Example: Pyrex Glass is used to make some beautiful, high-quality adult toys such as Glass Dildos by Phallix. Pyrex Glass dildos can easily be heated in warm water or cooled in cold water. Some of the other uses of Pyrex Glass are telescopes, glassware, and cookware.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Pyrex Glass is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Our cleaning instructions are based on the dildos that we carry. Cheaper glass dildos may not be able to be cleaned in the same manner, so check with the manufacturer.

Glass is very easy to clean and can be washed with soap and water, sex toy cleaner, and putting them in the dishwasher. Do not use any abrasive cleaner so as not to scratch it and dull the surface. Ensure the water is at room temperature before adding or removing any glass as sudden, drastic temperature changes may, on rare occasions, cause it to crack.

You may boil or put Borosilicate Schott glass in the dishwasher. However, having it in a pot of boiling water can knock it around, causing it to hit the sides of the pot, so you may want to wrap it in a washcloth to prevent it from knocking about. If you heat it by boiling it or put it in the dishwasher, always test the temperature before picking it up or using it for sex play as glass can burn the skin at high heat. Remember, it holds its heat very well.

  • Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

  • Recycling Level: Pyrex Glass can be recycled.

Rubber

An elastic hydrocarbon polymer that occurs naturally as sap from various plants but is also synthetically reproduced.

  • Example: Some sex toys are made from rubber. A few examples are the Pearl Shine Vibe, the Thumping Bunny Dual Vibrator, and the Super Flower Power. Some examples of other uses of rubber are rubber bands, pencil erasers, and household and medical gloves.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Rubber can contain phthalates; however, it depends on the type of rubber. Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are used to soften rubbers and plastics. A growing body of evidence shows that phthalates pose a health risk and can have a toxic effect. If you own a rubber adult toy and suspect that it may contain phthalates, we highly recommend using a condom to reduce the risk of possible exposure. Another option is to purchase toys that are phthalate-free such as toys made of Elastomer or Silicone. It is also important to note that rubber can contain latex, which is an allergen for some people. We recommend adult toys made of pure silicone for individuals with a sensitivity or allergy to latex.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Jelly Rubber Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased

Satin

Satin is a cloth that typically has a glossy surface and a dull back.

  • Example: Satin is used to line high quality throws that we carry under our Protect Bedding section. Satin is also commonly used for apparel, neckties, upholstery, evening gowns, and bedsheets.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Hypoallergenic and nontoxic.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Satin is the best hand washed with a mild cleaner and warm water and air-dried.

SensaFirm

SensaFirm is a trademarked name for a line of products made of a soft variation of thermoplastic elastomer, a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. TPE is a polymer that has many uses, one being sex toys. See Elastomers for more information.

Senso & Senso Plus

Senso is a registered name for a line of jelly rubber adult toys. Jelly rubber is a polyvinyl chloride with added softening agents.

  • Example: In many sex toys.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some jelly rubber toys may contain phthalates, a chemical used to soften plastics linked to several environmental and individual health issues. If you consider purchasing a jelly sex toy, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomers

  • Lubricants: Waterbased lubricants only. Silicone or oil-based lubricants will damage this material.

Sil-A-Gel

Sil-a-Gel is a trademarked name for a variation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC is a widely used thermoplastic polymer. Sil-a-gel is not a material, rather an additive and may be mixed with materials that contain phthalates.

There is also medical-grade silica gel that is safe to touch externally but not safe internally as it may cause dryness and irritation to the vagina and rectum mucous membranes. Colored silica gel has chemical coatings on them, which may be a mild skin irritant externally.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Sil-a-Gel is said to be antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and free of phthalates but this may not always be the case. A positive aspect of Sil-a-Gel is that it is latex and cadmium free. Cadmium is a known carcinogen that is sometimes used in PVC products.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See PVC

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased Only

Silicone

Not to be confused with silicon, which is an entirely different substance: metalloid chemical. Silicones are polymers that contain silicon with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sometimes other chemical elements. It is flexible, heat-resistant, nonstick, nonporous, and rubber-like without having any toxins. Silicone sex toys require little maintenance and can last a lifetime. Both platinum and peroxide cured silicones are ideal for sex toys and are both nonporous and nontoxic. Peroxide cured silicone requires a post-bake.

Medical-grade silicones are tested to be used for medical purposes. It is regulated by the FDA and has three groupings: non-implantable, short term implantable, and long-term implantable. It has to be a more pure grade of silicone to be labeled as a medical-grade silicone. Sex toys, however, are typically not medical grade because pigment is added as well as other reasons. Make sure to see our Silicone Sex Toys: Is Yours Real? guide for more information about this.

The fact that silicone is the preferred material of most sex toy consumers, many sex toy manufacturers have found a way to misrepresent their products as silicone even if it is a minimal part of the whole. There is no regulation around what can be labeled silicone. There was an internet rumor among sex toy bloggers that it had to be at least 10% silicone, but that is incorrect. It does not even have to contain silicone, so sex toys can be made of less expensive materials that could potentially contain toxins, such as phthalates. We do not consider silicone blend toys silicone; rather, they would fall under the TPR, TPE, elastomer material categories as they are porous.

If you are considering purchasing a silicone sex toy, we recommend checking with the manufacturer on whether or not the product is free of phthalates or purchasing from a store such as Holistic Wisdom, Inc. as we are committed to offering only body safe sexual products.

Please see our Silicone Sex Toys Article for more information on this material and how to determine if it is really silicone and the differences between food-grade silicone and medical-grade silicone.

  • Example: Silicone is used to make many high-quality adult toys. Platinum cured silicone is the most reliable, safe, health-smart, soft material used for sex toys but food-grade is also safe. It is also used for some personal lubricants. Some other popular uses of silicone range from hair products and cookware to breast implants and electronic components.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: 100% silicone is phthalate-free. Silicone blends like TPR, TPE may contain toxic additives. Silicone is hygienic as there are no open pores to harbor bacteria. Silicone is also hypoallergenic and has no reaction to the human body; 100% silicone sex toys are completely inert. Silicone does not alter pH balance or cause a response to the body's natural chemistry.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Use soap and water to clean waterproof silicone sex toys. Lathering them up for 30 seconds and then rinsing them off and letting them air dry before storing them has proven to be sufficient. You can use a sex toy cleaner on them for added disinfecting, but it should not be necessary to properly clean your silicone sex toy.

You may also use water, and a 10% bleach solution, soaking for 10 minutes or a 10% vinegar solution while soaking for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and let air dry.

Some manufacturers claim that using rubbing alcohol on silicone will damage their sex toy, so unless it specifically says you can use rubbing alcohol on the silicone sex toy you purchased, avoid it.

If your sex toy does not have mechanical components, 100% silicone sex toys can be boiled on the stove for 5 minutes to be sterilized. They can also be cleaned in the dishwasher on the sanitize setting without detergent (water only).

See our Lubricant Guide to determine which lubricants you may or may not use with silicone sex toys.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased lubricants only. Silicone lubricants may damage this material. The reason to not use silicone lubricants on silicone sex toys is that a silicone lubricant may bond to the toy and ruin it. This isn't true for ALL silicone sex toys as it depends on the purity of the silicone sex toy and the purity of the lubricant. If you wish to test your silicone sex toy with silicone lubricant, use the base's bottom and do a test spot. If the area does not become sticky or gummy, then the silicone lubricant should be compatible.

  • Recycling Information: Silicone is a chemically inert substance. This means that there are no toxic ingredients that can be outgassed or leached from the substance. Silicone, itself, is not toxic to aquatic plants or animals, nor does it have a negative effect on soil organisms. Although silicone is not biodegradable, it may be recycled.

Silicone vs. Silicon

There is some confusion between Silicone vs. Silicon when it comes to sex toy materials. Some people make the mistake of thinking this is a difference in how one culturally spells it (assuming that the Silicone is a US version and that Silicon is a UK version); however, that is incorrect. Silicone and Silicon are not the same things, and one should not confuse them, especially when it comes to sex toys.

Silicones may be considered similar function but differ in structure to mineral silicates in a dramatic way. Silicon (Si) is naturally found in stone such as quartz and mica and can be made into glass. Thus when people incorrectly call a silicone dildo a silicon dildo, it may be that they simply do not know the difference or a typo. Consistently making this mistake in listing a sex toy is not a good indicator of a knowledgeable retailer. You may want to avoid a company that does not understand this fundamental difference.

Silicone Rubber Blend

Silicone rubber is an elastomer and should not be treated as silicone or rubber.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: See elastomer category.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Water-based lubricants

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomer For Cleaning

Silk

Silk is a natural protein fiber; the best-known type is obtained from cocoons made by the larvae of the mulberry silkworm reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance comes from the fibers' triangular prism-like structure, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles. Silk's good absorbency makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather and while active. Its low conductivity keeps warm air close to the skin during cold weather.

  • Example: Some forms of Silk can be woven into different types of textiles, such as brocade for lingerie. An example is the Chrysanthemum Floral Corset. Silk's elegant, soft luster and beautiful drape make it perfect for lingerie. Silk is also used to create some sexual products that we sell.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Some individuals can be allergic to Silk material; however, it is not common.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Silk may be hand-washed in cool or tepid water with a gentle soap made for lingerie. Silk should be air-dried and never put in a dryer as it cannot withstand high temperatures.

SoftSkins

SoftSkins is a trademarked name for a variation of soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers..

SoftTouch

SoftTouch is a trademarked brand of products made from a variety of thermoplastic elastomer made to mimic real skin. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is a ferrous alloy with a 10.5% chromium content. This metal is smooth, firm, and long-lasting if taken care of properly. It can be easily heated or cooled. Cheap grades of stainless steel sex toys can rust. That is why we only sell 316-grade stainless steel, which provides superior corrosion resistance, and added strength and toughness.

Example: A few examples of sex toys made from stainless steel are from the Njoy sex toy line. Some other common uses of this material are cutlery and watch straps.

Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Stainless steel is hypoallergenic and nontoxic. This material has no pores and cannot absorb bacteria. When it is sanitized, it is unable to transmit infection, disease, or smell.

Cleaning Recommendations: See Metal For Cleaning

Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

Recycling Information: Stainless steel can be recycled.

Stone Sex Toys

Stone sex toys can include crystal dildos and yoni eggs (jade eggs). Please see our Crystal Dildos & Yoni Eggs Guide for more information.

SuperSkin

Superskin is a patented material that is exceptionally soft and mimics real skin.

  • Example: The only sex toy made of Superskin is the Fleshlight.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: SuperSkin is phthalate-free. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Cyberskin For Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased lubricants only. Oil-based lubricants should NOT be used, since they will slowly destroy the Fleshlight material over time.

Suede

Suede comprises the inner splits of a side of leather and has a soft, napped finish. Suede is softer, thinner, and less durable than leather. Its softness, thinness, and pliability make it suitable for clothing and delicate uses.

  • Example: Suede is used to make some high-quality sexual aids such as our BDSM sex toys and gear. Some of the other uses of suede are coats, upholstery, shoes, and handbags.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Suede may be treated with formaldehyde resin, an allergen for some individuals.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: Due to its textured nature and open pores, suede may become dirty and absorb liquids quickly. This delicate material should be cleaned with special suede cleaners as water and detergents can damage this material.

Techno-Skin

Techno-Skin is a registered name for a line of sex toy products made from soft variations of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. TPE is a polymer that has many uses, one being sex toys. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

TPE

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is a thermoplastic polymer blend that can be manufactured into various textures. TPE is less porous than Cyberskin but more porous than Silicone.

  • Example: A variety of high-quality sex toys are made of TPE. This high-quality material is used for many of our best sex toys. Most men's sex toys as male masturbation sleeves and penis rings (cockrings) are often better made from a stretchy material. TPE has many other uses as well. Some examples are automobile airbag covers, yoga mats, and medical catheters.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: TPE material is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free. No solvents or latex are used in the production process. See elastomers for more information.

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomer For Cleaning

  • Compatible Lubricants: Use only water-based lubricants with TPE.

TPR

TPR (Thermoplastic rubber) is a polymer blend that exhibits a thermoplastic character.

Example: Many adult toys are made of TPR like our men's masturbation sleeves and cockrings. Other common uses of this material are bicycle handles, toothbrush handles, and some children's toys.

Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: TPR is hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and phthalate-free. TPR is less porous than Cyberskin but more porous than silicone. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomer For Cleaning

Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased Only

TPR Silicone Blend

TPR (Thermoplastic rubber) is a polymer blend that exhibits a thermoplastic character. Sometimes manufacturers call it TPR Silicone but it is not to be confused with silicone and is to be treated as an elastomer.

  • Example: Many adult toys are made of TPR such as our men's sex toys: masturbation sleeves, cockrings and penis extenders. Other common uses of this material are bicycle handles, toothbrush handles, and some children's toys.

  • Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: TPR is phthalate-free. TPR is less porous than Cyberskin but more porous than silicone, therefore we recommend condom use with sex toys made of TPR to prevent the spread of bacteria or take great care to keep it clean with antibacterial sex toy cleaner.

  • Compatible Lubricants: Water-based lubricants

  • Cleaning Recommendations: See Elastomer For Cleaning

  • Recycling Level: TPR silicone is recyclable. The recycling process is in two parts. First, the production waste is recycled, and then the finished product can be recycled as well.

TrueSkin

Trueskin is a registered name for versions of products made from variations of Thermal Plastic Elastomer (TPE), a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

Ultra Realistic 3.0 - UR3

UR3 is a trademarked name for a line of sex toys made of a variation of soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and silicone. See health warnings under the sex toy material: Elastomers.

Velvet Cote

Velvet Cote is a trademarked name for a synthetic polymerization product. This material is non-porous with a velvety feel.

Example: Velvet Cote is often used when making clitoral vibrators as it is put over a firmer plastic to give the vibrator a softer feel.

Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Velvet Cote is hypoallergenic and phthalate-free.

Cleaning Recommendations: See ABS Plastic Cleaning

Compatible Lubricants: Waterbased & Silicone

Vinyl

Vinyl is an organic compound that contains a vinyl group (also called ethenyl). One form of vinyl that is used to make high-quality adult toys is food grade vinyl. See Food-grade Vinyl.

Vinyl Rubber

Vinyl rubber is an elastic hydrocarbon polymer that occurs as a milky emulsion in the sap of many plants but can also be produced synthetically. Vinyl rubber is somewhat less porous and is a better quality material than latex rubber but is not as good quality as adult toys made of Silicone.

Example: Many lower-quality sex toys are made from vinyl rubber. These toys tend to emit a strong chemical odor and flavor. Examples of other products made from vinyl rubber are dog/cat toys and specialized erasers.

Allergy Or Toxin Warnings: Vinyl Rubber may contain phthalates. Phthalates are a family of chemicals that are used to soften rubbers and plastics. A growing body of evidence shows that phthalates pose a health risk and can have a toxic effect. If you own a vinyl rubber adult toy and suspect that it may contain phthalates, we highly recommend using a condom to reduce the risk of possible exposure. Another option is to purchase toys that are phthalates free such as toys made of Elastomer or Silicone. It is also important to note that vinyl adult toys can contain latex, which is an allergen for some people. For individuals with a sensitivity or allergy to latex, we recommend checking with the store or manufacturer to find out if the vinyl rubber contains latex before you purchase your sex toy or purchasing adult toys made of 100% platinum cured silicone.
