Sex toys, Vibrator Noise ReviewsHow We Determine Noise Ratings

We use a noise rating system based on most average vibrators. How loud a vibrator is and what is best for you comes down to personal preference. It is based on a rating system using subjective customer reviews and our staff's insights into each product.

Our noise reviews are based on how a vibrator compares to other vibrators in its class. Products with multiple speeds and settings are rated using their highest vibration level. When we provide noise level ratings on our vibrators, we do so with reference to how well you might hear the vibrator through a closed door. In real life, how loud a vibrator is also influenced by various environmental factors, which we will review below.

Sound Barriers

Keeping in mind that how loud something sounds can depend on how many sound barriers in your environment. The more sound barriers you have in place when using a sex toy, the less obvious sounds will be. For example, using a vibrator under bedding will muffle noise, as will using a fan, playing music or a sound machine. If the vibrator you purchase is louder than you desire, you can add sound barriers to help hide any sounds it omits to keep children, roommates, etc., from hearing it.

Sound Amplifiers

Be aware that using a vibrator in a bathtub can cause vibrations to reverberate throughout the bathtub, making it easy to hear on the floor below or next to your bathroom. Also, keep in mind that the less furniture and decor there is in a room, the more sound will bounce off the walls. Be aware that creating sound buffers in these situations may be something you wish to consider even when the vibrator you have purchased runs on the quieter side.

Battery Vibrators

Many loud vibrators are due to batteries moving around inside of them. To remedy this, ensure your batteries are in place tightly and the cap is on snugly to keep the batteries from moving around. Often vibrators come with cardboard or plastic inserts to keep the batteries from moving around. If the manufacturer suggests keeping an insert inside the battery case, it may help reduce noise. Ensure you do not use something inside the battery casing that could cause a fire and is not recommended by the manufacturer.

Volume Levels

Our noise ratings rank from 1-5, with a rating of five being the loudest. To learn more about how we determine our vibrator power levels, please see our helpful Vibrator Power Reviews Guide.
