Healthy Ejaculate
Healthy ejaculate is an integral part of a man's overall health. This guide will review ways to ensure health and address concerns regarding ejaculate volume and sperm quality. If you are concerned about maximizing fertility as make sure to see our guide on Pregnancy Safe Lubricants.
Concerns About Volume
Some men feel concerned that the less ejaculate they have, the less fertile they are; however, semen is a very small part of ejaculate. Even in men who have low volume ejaculate, can be producing millions of sperm. The typical ejaculation volume for most men is 1.5 ml to 5 ml. The volume is age-related, with men reaching their maximum levels in their mid-thirties and decreasing after 50. This includes men who have had vasectomies.
Increasing Volume & Quality Of Ejaculate
If you are looking to produce more semen or increase your seminal fluid, we have some tips that can help make a difference below.
Make Sure You Are Hydrated
Your semen is dependent upon the water you consume. Make sure that you are hydrated and drinking enough fluids during the day. Avoid beverages like sugary soda and alcohol as they can dehydrate you. Furthermore, alcohol can affect the quality of your sperm and lower sperm count.
Keep Testicles Cool
The testicles are positioned away from your body as they need to maintain a lower temperature than the rest of your body which is typically around 98.6 °F (37.0 °C). Keeping them cool may mean avoiding heated seats in cars, hot tubs, and saunas and wearing underwear such as loose-fitting boxers to allow the testicles to avoid being pressed against your body's heat. If you sit with your legs crossed or in another position where you are forcing your testicles to be pushed into your body, you may also be increasing the temperature so this may be something you avoid.
Abstain From Ejaculating
If you refrain from ejaculating for just 1-2 days, you can quickly replenish your sperm, as the average man produces 130 to 200 million sperm cells per day.
Supplements
Both zinc and folic acid can increase sperm count. A study found that taken together; they can increase sperm count by 74% when 1mg of folic acid and 15 mg of zinc were taken. Other supplements such as selenium, amino acids (arginine, carnitine, lysine), and lycopene are also helpful.
Foods
Studies show that there has been a significant drop in sperm quality and count in men over the last 50 years, which has several implications. One of the most striking factors is the increased intake of saturated fats. The higher the saturated fat intake, the lower the sperm count, so eating healthy fats through walnuts and avocados with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids is ideal as healthy fats can drastically improve sperm count.
Oxidative stress also plays a considerable role in infertility. Ensuring you have enough antioxidants is crucial as they are more concentrated in your testicles than in anywhere else in your body for your reproductive health. This boils down to eating less meat and dairy and consuming more fruits and vegetables. To learn more about a healthy diet, please see our nutrition guide: Nutrition Guide for Good Sex & Health.
Maintain Overall Health
Being overweight, having high cholesterol, and smoking can cause issues with ejaculation and erections. Taking care of your overall health with good nutrition and exercise is vital for your sexual health.
Kegel Exercises For Men
Many men want to know ways to prolong ejaculation and make it come out with force. One healthy way to do this is to work out your PC (pubococcygeus) muscle, better known as the Kegel muscle (also found in women).
